Shape and line
Shape is the outer silhouette — the line the eye traces around hair plus beard plus mustache. It is not the same as form. Form is the interior sculpture (solid, graduated, layered). Shape is what that sculpture reads as from across the shop: oval, square, triangular, round, or a custom outline.
Line direction is part of shape. Horizontal lines add width and rest. Vertical lines add height and strength. Diagonal lines add movement. A hard horizontal nape on an oblong face lengthens the wrong way. A vertical crop on a round face is often the better design line.
The design line is the artistic line you cut — the perimeter, the bang, the beard cheek line, the nape. The natural part is where hair falls from growth patterns and the apex. Fighting the natural part with a design line the hair will not stay in is a proportion failure: the shape you cut is not the shape the client wears home. Sometimes you design with the part; sometimes you design a style that conceals it. You do not pretend a cowlick is optional.
Balance: symmetrical versus asymmetrical
Balance is equal visual weight, not equal gram weight.
Symmetrical design mirrors left and right: same length, same density, same beard corner. Most classic barbering is symmetrical. A mismatch of sideburn length or a beard cheek line that is a half-inch higher on one side is usually an error, not a design, unless you intended it and documented it.
Asymmetrical design is unequal in line but still balanced in visual weight. A side part with more volume on the heavy side, an undercut on one side, or a longer sweep can be balanced if the eye accepts the weight. Asymmetry without balance just looks unfinished.
Visual weight is whatever pulls the eye: width, density, darkness, activated texture, a hard outline, a bright skin fade against a dark top. A dense black beard on a light, tight crop has huge visual weight in the lower third — that is a proportion decision, not only a shave. High contrast (skin fade to a dark top) is heavier at the outline than a shadow fade of the same length.
Proportion of hair to face and body
Proportion is the size relationship among parts: hair to face, beard to hair, head to body.
- A tall client with a small head can wear more height on top; a short client with a large head is easily over-scaled by a high crop plus a full beard.
- A wide body with a tiny, tight head silhouette can look pinched; a slim client with a massive silhouette or a huge beard can look top-heavy.
- The face divides loosely into thirds: hairline to brow, brow to base of nose, base of nose to chin. A beard that adds a fourth chin changes the lower third. Bangs that cover the eyebrows change the upper third.
- Hair density changes proportion: thick hair reads heavier at the same length as fine hair.
Oregon does not require a numbered golden-ratio formula. It requires you to notice when the hair or beard is too much or too little for the head you analyzed in 9.1.

Rhythm: repeating versus alternating
Rhythm is the repetition of a line or texture.
Repeating rhythm uses the same unit again: even layers, a consistent fade, uniform braid size, a mustache and beard that share one outline.
Alternating rhythm switches units: a hard part on one side and a soft blend on the other; large twists mixed with small; a solid bang against an activated crown.
Rhythm should match the design goal. Random clumps with no repeating or alternating plan read as an unfinished cut, not as texture.
Beard as a design element under Oregon scope
ORS 690.005(2)(d) authorizes shaving, trimming, or cutting the beard or mustache. That is design, not only Chapter 11 shaving technique. The beard has:
- A cheek line relative to the zygomatic bone
- A neckline relative to the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple) — usually above it, not on it
- A mustache line over the maxillae, relative to the lip
- Density and length that add or subtract visual weight in the lower third
Use the facial-shape rules from 9.1: add chin length on a round or convex client if they want elongation; keep the jaw close on a pear/triangular face; fill the chin on a heart or diamond. Then apply balance: left cheek line matches right unless you documented an asymmetrical request. Proportion: a full beard plus a tall crop is a lot of visual weight; a full beard plus a shaved head shifts all the shape to the mandible.
You still do not diagnose skin disease in the beard area. Barbering remains cosmetic. A rash, unexplained sores, or suspected infection is a physician referral from the treatments chapter, not a closer outline.
Natural hair care and proportion
ORS 690.046(3) provides that a person who holds a barbering certificate may also practice natural hair care. Braids, locks, twists, and similar structuring change proportion and rhythm without a shear length change: they reduce apparent width or increase it depending on how close to the scalp you start, how large the units are, and whether you leave an unbraided perimeter. Large, repeating braid units add visual weight. Small, tight units reduce the silhouette. An unfinished, uneven lock pattern is a rhythm problem.
Natural hair care does not convert the barber into a hair designer certificate or a cosmetology umbrella. Oregon does not offer an umbrella cosmetology certificate — each field is separate. It does mean design questions about proportion are not limited to clipper fades. ORS 690.005(2)(c) still bars galvanic and faradic appliances; braiding is not an electrical modality.
