Kanji readings (on'yomi and kun'yomi for approximately 1,000 kanji), orthography (kanji to kana and vice versa), word formation, contextually-defined expressions, paraphrases, and usage in context. Approximately 35–40 items.

Sentential grammar forms selecting the correct grammar pattern, sentence composition (rearranging parts into a logical sentence), and text-level grammar selecting the most coherent expression within a passage. Approximately 15–20 items.

Reading Comprehension28%

Short passages (200–300 characters on everyday topics), medium passages (approximately 500 characters on social or work topics), long passages (800–1,000 characters opinion pieces or explanatory articles), integrated comprehension, and information retrieval from notices or charts. Listening Comprehension22%

Task-based comprehension (understanding a spoken exchange to determine the next action), key point comprehension (identifying the main idea of a monologue or dialogue), outline comprehension, quick response (choosing the most appropriate reply to a short spoken prompt), and integrated listening comprehension.
