Exam Content Breakdown
Based on the official Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) content outline
Kanji reading, orthography, contextually-defined expressions, paraphrases, and usage in context. Tests approximately 3,700–4,000 vocabulary items at N3 level.
Selecting the correct grammar form, sentence composition (scrambled sentences), and text grammar (fill in logical connectives in a passage). Covers key N3 patterns including 〜ために、〜のに、〜てはじめて、〜ずにはいられない and more.
Short passages (around 150 characters), mid-size passages (around 350 characters), long passages (around 550 characters), and information retrieval from notices/charts. Tests ability to identify main ideas, specific facts, and implied meaning.
Task-based comprehension (identify what action to take), key-point comprehension (understand the main point), general outline comprehension, verbal expressions, and quick responses. Audio is played once; all answers are multiple-choice.
