About the JLPT N2 Exam
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2 is the second-highest of five levels offered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services. It certifies that test-takers can read newspaper and magazine articles on a broad range of topics, understand clearly-argued opinion pieces, follow spoken news and natural-speed conversations in everyday and wider contexts, and grasp the speaker's intent and relationships between participants. N2 corresponds roughly to CEFR B1–B2 and is widely recognised by Japanese universities for admission and by employers as evidence of functional professional Japanese proficiency. The exam is administered twice per year (July and December 2026 dates: 5 July and 6 December) at test sites across Japan and in approximately 80 countries worldwide. The test is entirely multiple-choice with four options per item; there is no speaking or writing section. Scoring is scaled and scaled sectional minimums (19 out of 60 per section) prevent passing by performing well in only one area. The overall pass rate is approximately 37–40%.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the JLPT N2 and who administers it?
The JLPT N2 (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test Level N2) is an upper-intermediate certification exam administered jointly by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). It is offered twice a year — in July and December — at sites across Japan and in approximately 80 countries worldwide.
How is the JLPT N2 scored and what is the passing score?
The total score range is 0–180, divided equally into three sections: Language Knowledge (Vocabulary/Grammar) 0–60, Reading 0–60, and Listening 0–60. To pass, you need at least 90 total (50%) AND a minimum of 19 points in each section. Failing any one section automatically fails you even if your total exceeds 90.
How many questions and how long is the JLPT N2?
The JLPT N2 has approximately 100–115 multiple-choice items and lasts 155 minutes total. Section 1 (Language Knowledge and Reading) is 105 minutes; Section 2 (Listening) is 50 minutes. All questions have four answer choices; there is no speaking or writing.
What vocabulary and kanji knowledge does N2 require?
N2 requires approximately 6,000 vocabulary items and the ability to read approximately 1,000 kanji — roughly the level Japanese students achieve by the end of middle school (Joyo kanji list, grades 1–9). You also need to know about 200 grammar patterns, including formal patterns used in business writing and news.
When is the JLPT N2 offered in 2026?
In 2026 the JLPT is offered on two dates: Sunday 5 July 2026 (first session) and Sunday 6 December 2026 (second session). Some overseas cities hold the test only in July or only in December — check the official JLPT website for your city's schedule and registration window.
What CEFR level does JLPT N2 correspond to?
JLPT N2 corresponds to CEFR B1–B2 (Independent User). A total score of 112–180 is aligned with B2 (upper intermediate), while a score of 90–111 aligns with B1. This correspondence has been formally published on JLPT score reports since the December 2025 examination.
