Why Article 410 Matters on the Arkansas JW Exam

Prov’s Arkansas Journeyman outline allocates 6 items to Utilization and General Use Equipment. Lighting questions almost always come from Article 410 (NEC 2023), often cross-linked to 314.27 for support and 110.3(B) for listing/instructions. You will not be asked to design decorative layouts — you will be asked whether a pendant may hang over a tub, how far a closet lamp must clear a shelf, whether insulation may touch a recessed can, and how heavy a fixture an outlet box may carry.

Tab 410.10, 410.16, 410.115–410.116, and 410.151, plus 314.27. Keep Article 100 definitions handy so you do not confuse a luminaire with a bare lampholder.


Luminaire vs. Lampholder

Article 100 defines a luminaire as a complete lighting unit consisting of a light source together with parts designed to distribute light, position and protect the source, and connect it to the supply. A lampholder is the socket alone. Construction and wiring rules differ: screw-shell lampholders have polarization and voltage limits in 410.50 and related sections, while the bulk of Part II–X applies to complete luminaires. On exam stems that say “fixture,” treat it as a luminaire unless the question clearly means only the socket.

410.6 requires luminaires to be listed. Field-built lighting assemblies are not a journeyman workaround. 110.3(B) then forces you to follow the listing and installation instructions — including wet-location marks and IC ratings.


Location Rules — 410.10

Bathtub and Shower Areas — 410.10(D)

Measure a zone 3 feet (900 mm) horizontally and 8 feet (2.5 m) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. Inside that zone, the Code prohibits:

  • Cord-connected luminaires
  • Chain-, cable-, or cord-suspended luminaires
  • Lighting track
  • Pendants
  • Ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans

Luminaires located within the outside dimensions of the tub or shower space, to a height of 8 feet, must be marked suitable for damp locations — and for wet locations where subject to shower spray. GFCI for bathroom receptacles still lives in 210.8(A); do not invent a 410.10(D) GFCI rule for every luminaire unless the listing or another section requires it.

Exam trap: A paddle fan centered over a tub with the blades inside the 3 ft / 8 ft envelope fails 410.10(D) even if the fan is “out of reach” by informal judgment.

Clothes Closets — 410.16

410.16 sets both permitted luminaire types and clearances to the nearest storage-space point (shelf, rod, or similar).

Pendents are not the default closet solution. Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires on the wall or ceiling above the door, clear of the storage cube, are the usual compliant pattern. If a stem asks for the minimum clearance “above the clothes storage,” match the lamp/luminaire type to the table in 410.16 — do not guess from 410.10(D).

Other Location Limits

410.10(A) covers luminaires in damp or wet locations (listed for the environment). 410.10(C) addresses luminaires near combustible material. Outdoor luminaires and under-canopy equipment must carry the correct wet/damp listing — another 110.3(B) enforcement point.


Recessed Luminaires — Thermal Protection & Clearance

410.115 requires thermal protection for many recessed luminaires (with listed exceptions). 410.116 is the clearance workhorse:

  • Non-Type IC recessed luminaires: maintain not less than ½ inch (12.7 mm) from combustible materials at points other than the support points, and not less than 3 inches (76 mm) from thermal insulation — unless the luminaire is identified for closer spacing.
  • Type IC (Insulated Ceiling) luminaires: listed for direct contact with thermal insulation and may be installed in contact with combustible materials when so identified.

On the Prov exam, “IC” versus “non-IC” is a binary decision tree. If the stem says insulation will be packed against the housing and the fixture is non-IC, the install fails unless clearance is provided or the fixture is replaced with Type IC.


Support, Outlet Boxes, and Track Lighting

314.27(A) allows a listed outlet box to support a luminaire weighing 50 lb (23 kg) or less, unless the box is listed for a greater weight. Heavier luminaires need independent support or a box listed for the load. 314.27(C) governs boxes for ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans — use a box listed for fan support (commonly marked for 70 lb or the fan’s weight). Never hang a fan from a standard luminaire-only box.

Lighting track (410.151 and following) must be permanently installed, supplied by a branch circuit not exceeding the track’s rating, and loaded so that the connected load does not exceed the rating of the branch circuit and the track. Track is prohibited in the 410.10(D) tub/shower zone and is not a substitute for required general lighting outlets where the Code demands them.


Polarization, Grounding, and Wiring Practice

Luminaires must be wired so the grounded conductor (neutral) lands on the identified terminal (typically the screw-shell of an Edison lampholder) and the ungrounded conductor on the center contact — polarization rules in 410.50 and related text prevent a “hot shell” shock hazard. Metal luminaires generally require equipment grounding per 410.40–410.46 and Article 250. Flexible cords for luminaires are tightly limited; do not use cord as a substitute for Chapter 3 wiring methods except where 410 expressly allows listed cord-connected luminaires.

Open-book method on exam day: (1) identify environment (closet, tub, insulated ceiling, wet); (2) open the matching 410 subsection; (3) confirm listing marks (IC, wet, damp); (4) check support weight in 314.27 if the stem mentions pounds.
