On the Arkansas Prov JW exam (NEC 2023), receptacle-placement stems are classic open-book lookups that still punish candidates who open Article 406 first. Placement and required outlets live in Article 210 Part III, especially 210.52. This section covers dwelling general wall spacing, small-appliance and kitchen countertop rules, bathrooms, outdoors, laundry, basements/garages, hallways, and foyers. GFCI/AFCI protection of those outlets is §§8.3–8.4.

General Habitable-Room Spacing — 210.52(A)
In dwelling-unit kitchens, family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, or similar rooms or areas, receptacle outlets must be installed so that no point measured horizontally along the floor line of any wall space is more than 6 feet from a receptacle outlet. Wall space generally includes any space 2 feet or more in width unbroken along the floor line by doorways, fireplaces, stationary appliances, and fixed cabinets without countertops or similar work surfaces (210.52(A)(2) — note the 2023 inclusion of stationary appliances as wall-space breakers).
Floor receptacles do not count toward the required wall receptacles unless they are located within 18 inches of the wall. Receptacles that are part of a luminaire or appliance, certain controlled receptacles, receptacles inside cabinets, and receptacles more than 5½ feet above the floor do not count as the required 210.52 receptacles.

Small-Appliance Circuits — 210.52(B)
The two or more 20 A small-appliance branch circuits required by 210.11(C)(1) shall serve all wall and floor receptacle outlets covered by 210.52(A) and all countertop outlets covered by 210.52(C) in the kitchen, pantry, breakfast room, dining room, or similar area, plus receptacle outlets for refrigeration equipment. Those circuits shall have no other outlets, subject to limited Exceptions (for example, a clock outlet or certain gas-fireplace switched receptacles — read the Exact Exception if cited).
210.52(B)(3) requires that receptacles serving kitchen countertop surfaces be supplied by not fewer than two small-appliance branch circuits — either or both of which may also supply other small-appliance outlets in the kitchen/dining/similar areas. You cannot put every countertop receptacle on a single 20 A circuit and call the second small-appliance circuit “dining only” if the countertop rule is not met.
Exam trap: a refrigerator on a small-appliance circuit is generally permitted; lighting outlets on that same circuit are not (absent a qualifying Exception).
Countertops and Work Surfaces — 210.52(C)
In kitchens, pantries, breakfast rooms, dining rooms, and similar areas of dwelling units:
- A receptacle outlet shall be installed at each wall countertop and work surface that is 12 inches or wider.
- Receptacle outlets shall be installed so that no point along the wall line is more than 24 inches, measured horizontally from a receptacle outlet in that space.
- Receptacle outlets rendered not readily accessible by appliances fastened in place, appliance garages, sinks, or rangetops generally do not count for the spacing requirement.
- Island and peninsula countertop rules were reworked in recent NEC cycles; for 2023, follow the island/peninsula subsections in 210.52(C) exactly as printed — Prov items may test whether a receptacle is required at the island, whether a blank cover for future receptacles is permitted, or how the wall-line measurement applies. Do not rely on 2017 memory.
Countertop receptacles are in addition to the wall-space receptacles of 210.52(A) — a wall receptacle behind a range does not satisfy a 24 in. countertop spacing need on the adjacent work surface.
Bathrooms — 210.52(D)
At least one receptacle outlet shall be installed within 3 feet of the outside edge of each basin. The receptacle outlet shall be located on a wall or partition adjacent to the basin or basin countertop, or on the countertop/basin support, and not more than 12 inches below the top of the basin (follow the exact 210.52(D) measurement language in the Code book). The bathroom receptacle circuit identity still comes from 210.11(C)(3) — typically a 20 A circuit that may serve receptacle outlets in more than one bathroom, with limits on what else it may supply.
Also remember 406.9(C) restrictions on receptacles in bathtub/shower zones — placement questions sometimes blend 210.52(D) with 406.9.

Outdoor receptacles are almost always GFCI-protected (210.8); laundry and kitchen receptacles often need both GFCI and AFCI — keep placement (this section) separate from protection (next sections) when the stem asks only “where must the outlet be installed?”
