Why Branch-Circuit Ratings Matter on the Arkansas JW Exam

The Arkansas Journeyman Electrician exam (Prov / ADLL Board of Electrical Examiners, NEC 2023, 60 questions, 3 hours, 70% pass) weights Service, Feeders, Branch Feeders and Overcurrent Protection at 8 items. On an open-book form, Prov will not ask you to memorize every Exception — but you will lose time if you cannot tell a branch circuit from a feeder, or if you confuse a small-appliance branch circuit with a general lighting circuit. Branch-Circuit Boundary (Article 100 + Article 210)

A branch circuit consists of the circuit conductors between the final overcurrent device protecting the circuit and the outlet(s). Everything upstream of that final OCPD is typically a feeder or service conductor path. Exam stems often hide the boundary behind language about panelboards, subpanels, and equipment disconnects — locate the last overcurrent device ahead of the load before choosing an Article 210 rule.

Branch-Circuit Ratings and Permissible Loads

210.3 identifies branch circuits by the maximum rating or setting of the overcurrent device. Common dwelling ratings are 15 A and 20 A for lighting/receptacle circuits; 30 A, 40 A, and 50 A appear for ranges, dryers, and similar equipment circuits. Match the OCPD rating to the conductor ampacity and to the outlet device rules in 210.21.

210.23 limits what a given rating may supply:

  • A 15 A or 20 A branch circuit may supply lighting units, utilization equipment, or a combination of both within the section’s load limits.
  • Cord-and-plug connected utilization equipment on a 15 A or 20 A circuit generally must not exceed 80% of the branch-circuit rating when the equipment is not fastened in place (and similar percentage rules apply for fastened-in-place equipment sharing the circuit — read the exact subsection in the stem).
  • Higher-rated circuits (30 A, 40 A, 50 A) have narrower permitted load types; do not assume a 30 A circuit can freely supply general lighting.

Exam trap: a stem that says “20 A small-appliance circuit” is pointing at 210.11(C)(1) / 210.52(B), not at a general 20 A bedroom circuit.


Conductor and OCPD Sizing (210.19 / 210.20)

210.19(A) requires branch-circuit conductors to have an ampacity not less than the maximum load to be served. Where a branch circuit supplies continuous loads or any combination of continuous and noncontinuous loads, the minimum conductor ampacity is not less than the noncontinuous load plus 125% of the continuous load (with listed exceptions for certain assemblies).

210.20(A) applies the same 125% continuous-load logic to the branch-circuit overcurrent device. Continuous load is generally a load expected to continue for 3 hours or more (Article 100). Lighting in many commercial spaces and some dwelling fixed loads can trigger this — read the stem’s duration language.

Practical open-book method:

  1. Identify continuous vs noncontinuous portions of the load.
  2. Size conductors and OCPD at noncontinuous + 1.25 × continuous (unless an exception applies).
  3. Verify termination temperature and ampacity adjustments in Article 310 / 110.14(C) if the stem gives ambient or bundling data (covered in other chapters).

Multiwire Branch Circuits (210.4)

Multiwire branch circuits share a neutral among two or more ungrounded conductors. 210.4(B) requires that each multiwire branch circuit be provided with a means that simultaneously disconnects all ungrounded conductors at the point where the branch circuit originates (typically a handle-tied or multipole breaker). 210.4(D) requires grouping of the ungrounded and grounded conductors of each multiwire circuit in the same raceway or cable where they originate.

Prov items love the simultaneous-disconnect rule: if a stem describes opening only one ungrounded conductor of a multiwire circuit while leaving the other energized on a shared neutral, the installation violates 210.4(B).


Dwelling Required Circuits — 210.11(C)

Beyond circuits sized for the Article 220 calculated load, 210.11(C) adds dwelling-unit minimums that appear constantly on journeyman exams:

210.11(A)–(B) still require enough branch circuits for the total calculated load and reasonably proportional distribution among panelboard circuits. Do not stop at the four specialty circuits and forget general lighting/receptacle load.

Small-appliance circuits must not supply lighting outlets or receptacles outside the kitchen/dining/breakfast/pantry/similar areas (with narrow exceptions such as a clock outlet or certain supplementary receptacles — check 210.52(B)(2) Exceptions when the stem cites them). Laundry and bathroom required circuits likewise have “no other outlets” / limited-outlet rules that Prov loves to twist.


Arkansas Exam Workflow

When a stem asks “how many 20 A circuits are required minimum for …,” inventory 210.11(C) first, then add circuits demanded by the load calculation and by dedicated equipment. When a stem asks about continuous-load conductor size, go to 210.19 / 210.20, not Article 220 demand factors. When a stem mentions a shared neutral and single-pole breakers without handle ties, open 210.4(B).
