12.2 Conductor Identification & Color Coding

Quick Answer: Grounded conductors (neutrals) → white or gray per 200.6. Equipment grounding conductors → bare, green, or green with yellow stripe per 250.119. Ungrounded conductors (hots) → any other color; never leave a white/gray/green wire as an unidentified hot. Multi-voltage systems need 210.5(C) phase/system identification. On Prov, color questions are quick points if you open the right section instead of guessing field habit.

Arkansas Prov’s Conductors items include identification even when the stem never says “Article 200.” If you see white, gray, green, orange high-leg, or “identify the grounded conductor,” you are in this section’s Code map.

Confusing “grounded” with “grounding” is the number-one vocabulary fail. Grounded = neutral. Grounding = EGC.


Grounded conductors — 200.6

Continuous coloring (smaller sizes)

200.6(A) generally requires grounded conductors 6 AWG and smaller to have a continuous white or gray outer finish, or three continuous white stripes on other than green insulation, along the entire length.

Larger conductors — identification at terminations

200.6(B) allows grounded conductors 4 AWG and larger to be identified at the time of installation by a distinctive white or gray marking at all terminations (paint, tape, or other effective means). The insulation need not be white for the full length when this method is used.

Gray vs white — distinguishing systems

Where different systems are present, 200.6 and related rules expect you not to mix white and gray carelessly across systems so that maintainers can tell neutrals apart. If one system uses white neutrals, another may use gray—or other permitted distinctive identification—so the grounded conductors of each system remain distinguishable.

Aerial cable and other special cases

200.6 also addresses messengers, multiconductor cables, and grounded conductors in specific assemblies. On an open-book exam, if the stem involves unusual cable, read the matching subsection rather than forcing the 6 AWG rule onto every product.

Worked examples

Example A: 12 AWG copper neutral in NM — factory white insulation satisfies 200.6(A).

Example B: 250 kcmil aluminum feeder neutral — black insulation with white tape at both ends of every splice and termination can satisfy 200.6(B) when applied per the section.

Example C: Two voltage systems in one enclosure — keep each system’s grounded conductors uniquely identified and documented so white on system A is not confused with white on system B.


Use of white or gray for hots — 200.7 (switch loops & re-identification)

200.7 is the classic “white used as hot” rule set.

  • A white or gray conductor shall not be used as an ungrounded conductor unless re-identified (permanent means other than white/gray/green) at terminations—except where 200.7(C) permits specific cable-assembly uses (for example, a white conductor in a cable used as a switch loop supply that is re-identified, or other listed permitted applications in the current Code text).
  • Never leave a white conductor as an unmarked hot in a raceway where installers will assume it is a neutral.

Prov stems: “A white conductor feeds a switch loop—what is required?” Answer pattern: permanent re-identification at terminations (tape, paint, or other effective means that is not white, gray, or green).


Equipment grounding conductors — 250.119

EGCs must be identified by:

  • Continuous green, or
  • Continuous green with one or more yellow stripes, or
  • Bare (uninsulated).

250.119 also covers when insulated conductors may be re-identified as EGCs at terminations (typically larger sizes, similar spirit to grounded-conductor marking). Critical exam bans:

  • Do not re-identify a green insulated conductor for use as a hot or neutral.
  • Do not use white or gray for an EGC.

If the stem shows a green wire landed on a breaker terminal as a phase conductor, that installation violates identification rules regardless of torque or ampacity.


Branch-circuit identification — 210.5

Grounded and grounding conductors on branch circuits

210.5(A) and (B) point back to grounded-conductor and EGC identification rules—branch circuits do not invent a separate color Code; they enforce Articles 200 and 250.

Identification of ungrounded conductors — 210.5(C)

Where the premises wiring system has branch circuits supplied from more than one nominal voltage system, each ungrounded conductor must be identified by system at terminations, connections, and splices. Identification means include color coding, marking tape, tagging, or other approved means. The method must be posted at each branch-circuit panelboard or similar distribution equipment (or otherwise as the section requires) so workers know which color means which voltage/system.

Typical field practice (not a substitute for reading 210.5(C)):

  • 120/208 V wye: black / red / blue hots, white neutral, green EGC.
  • 277/480 V wye: brown / orange / yellow hots, gray neutral, green EGC.
  • High-leg delta: the high leg (wild leg) is identified orange per 110.15 / related rules when present.

Prov may ask which conductor is the high leg or what posting is required when two systems share a building—open 210.5(C) and 110.15, do not rely on shop folklore alone.


DC, PV, and other special identification

Modern Code editions expand identification for DC systems, photovoltaic circuits, and other special applications (often in Articles 210, 690, or related). For Arkansas JW, focus first on AC premises wiring colors in 200.6 / 210.5 / 250.119. If a stem is clearly PV or DC, jump to the article named in the stem.

Arkansas-Specific Amendment: Article 200 Uses the 2020 NEC

Under Rule 010.13-008, Arkansas adopts the 2023 NEC but excludes Article 200 of the 2023 NEC. For grounded-conductor identification and use-and-identification rules governed by Article 200 — the 200.6 white/gray identification requirements, 200.7 restrictions on using white/gray as ungrounded conductors, and 200.2 insulation requirements for grounded conductors — Arkansas applies the 2020 NEC version of Article 200, not the 2023 version.

On the Arkansas Prov exam, if a stem turns on a difference between the 2020 and 2023 NEC text of Article 200 (the 2023 edition reorganized and renumbered several 200.x provisions), answer per the Arkansas amendment (2020 NEC Article 200), not the 2023 text in your open-book copy. The identification principles taught above — white/gray for grounded conductors, 200.7 re-identification for switch loops, 210.5(C) multi-voltage posting — remain the same in both editions; the risk is only when a stem tests a provision whose wording or subsection lettering changed between 2020 and 2023.
