Why Electrode Systems Matter on the Arkansas JW Exam

The Arkansas Journeyman Electrician exam (Prov / ADLL, NEC 2023, 60 questions, 3 hours, 70% pass) weights Grounding and Bonding at 6 items. Roughly the first half of that block is grounding electrode systems: what counts as an electrode, how it must be installed, and how those electrodes are bonded into one system. Under timed open-book conditions you will open Article 250 Part III (starting at 250.50), not invent jobsite folklore.

Prov stems often ask which electrode is permitted, when a second rod is required, how long a concrete-encased electrode must be, or whether a metal water pipe alone is enough. Your job is a repeatable lookup path through 250.50, 250.52, and 250.53.


The System Rule — 250.50

250.50 is the organizing sentence of this topic: all grounding electrodes described in 250.52(A)(1) through (A)(7) that are present at each building or structure served shall be bonded together to form the grounding electrode system. You do not get to pick your favorite electrode and ignore the others that already exist on the site.

Practical exam reading:

  1. Inventory what is present (water pipe? building steel? rebar in footing? existing ground ring?).
  2. Each recognized present electrode must be brought into the system by bonding.
  3. If none of those electrodes exist, install one or more electrodes permitted in 250.52(A)(4) through (A)(8) as required by 250.50.

“Present” is the trap word. A concrete-encased electrode that was never installed cannot be bonded later without demolition; if the footing rebar electrode was omitted during pour and no other electrodes exist, you install another permitted type (often rod electrodes). If the rebar electrode was installed, 250.50 requires it in the bonding set.

Concrete-encased electrode (often called “Ufer”) detail

Exam items love the 20 ft and ½ in. / 4 AWG numbers. If the building has multiple structurally connected sections of footing with rebar, the Code allows the 20 ft to be assembled from reinforcing steel bonded together — read 250.52(A)(3) carefully when the stem mentions segmented footings. If bare copper is used instead of rebar, it must still be the 20 ft / 4 AWG concrete-encased conductor described in the section.

Rod and pipe length

Installation length for rods and pipes is driven by 250.53(A)(1) and 250.53(G): electrodes of rod, pipe, or plate type shall be installed such that at least 8 ft of length is in contact with the soil (with listed exceptions for rock bottom / alternate methods). Do not confuse the 8 ft installation contact length with the 10 ft water-pipe contact rule or the 20 ft concrete-encased / ground-ring lengths.


Electrodes Not Permitted — 250.52(B)

250.52(B) is short and heavily tested:

  • Metal underground gas piping systems shall not be used as grounding electrodes.
  • Aluminum electrodes shall not be used.

If a stem asks whether the gas line can serve as “the” grounding electrode, the answer is no — even if the pipe is metallic and underground. Bonding of gas piping for other Article 250 purposes is a different topic; electrode duty is forbidden.


Installation Rules That Generate Exam Items — 250.53

Supplemental electrode for rod, pipe, or plate — 250.53(A)(2)

A single rod, pipe, or plate electrode that does not have a resistance to earth of 25 ohms or less shall be augmented by one additional electrode of a type specified in 250.52(A)(2) through (A)(8). Where multiple rod, pipe, or plate electrodes are installed to meet that requirement, they shall not be less than 6 ft apart.

Exam strategy:

  • If the question states measured resistance is 30 ohms with one rod → install a second electrode and space rods at least 6 ft apart.
  • If the question states resistance is 20 ohms → the supplemental electrode triggered by the 25-ohm rule is not required by 250.53(A)(2) (other Code requirements may still apply).
  • Many jobsites install two rods by default because proving ≤25 ohms takes testing time; that field habit is fine, but answer the stem from the Code text.

Underground water pipe must be supplemented — 250.53(D)(2)

Where the metal underground water pipe is used as a grounding electrode, 250.53(D)(2) requires it to be supplemented by an additional electrode of a type specified in 250.52(A)(2) through (A)(8). The supplemental electrode shall be bonded to the grounding electrode conductor, the grounded service-entrance conductor, a nonflexible grounded service raceway, or any grounded service enclosure — follow the connection points listed in the section.

Classic wrong answer: treating a qualifying water pipe as a complete electrode system by itself. On Prov, expect “must be supplemented.”

Continuity and bonding jumpers around water meters

250.53(D)(1) addresses continuity: bonding jumpers shall be used around insulated joints and around any equipment likely to be disconnected for repairs or replacement. Water meters are the usual exam example — size the bonding jumper per the grounding electrode conductor rules that apply (250.66 / related bonding sizing as referenced).

Ground ring burial depth

Remember 30 in. minimum burial for the ground ring conductor under 250.52(A)(4) / installation provisions — not the same depth as a typical rod driven vertically.


Bonding the Electrodes Together

Once electrodes are identified, they must form one grounding electrode system. Bonding jumpers connecting electrodes are sized from the grounding electrode conductor rules in 250.66 (with the electrode-type maximums in 250.66(A), (B), and (C) when the jumper only serves a rod/pipe/plate, concrete-encased electrode, or ground ring). Installation of those bonding jumpers must be secure, protected where subject to damage, and continuous as required in Part III.

Do not confuse:

  • Grounding electrode conductor (GEC) — connects the grounded system / service equipment to the electrode system (250.24, 250.64, 250.66).
  • Bonding jumper (electrode to electrode) — ties present electrodes into one system (250.50, 250.53).
  • Main bonding jumper — bonds grounded conductor to equipment grounding bus/enclosure at the service (250.28) — covered in §4.3.

Timed Open-Book Lookup Path

  1. Tab 250.50, 250.52, 250.53 before exam day.
  2. On an electrode-type question, open 250.52(A) first; check 250.52(B) if the stem names gas pipe or aluminum.
  3. On an installation question, open 250.53 and match the electrode type paragraph.
  4. Watch for number traps: 10 ft (water pipe / metal in-ground support), 20 ft (ufer / ground ring), 8 ft (rod contact), 6 ft (rod spacing), 25 ohms (supplemental trigger), 30 in. (ground ring depth), 2 ft² (plate area).
