10.3 Harmful Ingredients and MMA

NIC Domain 3 also tests ingredients that may cause harm. Washington then names two products you must never treat as a stronger professional option: 100% liquid methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer and methylene chloride products. WAC 308-20-110(15) is the rule. Chemistry explains why those bottles are dangerous. It does not authorize you to invent extra Washington bans or unpublished concentration limits.

What WAC 308-20-110(15) actually says

Read the rule as three related duties, not as salon folklore.

No establishment or school may have on the premises cosmetic products containing hazardous substances banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in cosmetic products. Use of 100% liquid methyl methacrylate monomer and methylene chloride products is prohibited. No product may be used in a manner the FDA disapproves.

Exam-ready consequences:

  • Possession on the premises of FDA-banned cosmetic ingredients is already a problem. A closed bottle in the Kent dispensary still counts.
  • The liquid MMA prohibition is written as 100% liquid MMA monomer. Do not invent a Washington ppm, a 10% MMA is fine board number, or a trace MMA allowed if the SDS is posted exception. Chapter 308-20 does not publish those extras.

EMA is the common professional liquid taught with benzoyl peroxide powder systems. EMA is still a sensitizer and still a vapor source. It is not the banned MMA bottle.
