16.2 Acrylic Application
NIC Domain 7 tests whether you can apply an enhancement that stays on the plate and off living skin. The NIC practical isolates a 20-minute sculptured nail (Chapter 15): low-odor monomer, original labeled containers, factory-sealed product, extension beyond the assigned free edge, form off without breaking. This section is the application sequence that makes that structure possible: prep, primer, forms or tips, zones, apex, C-curve, sidewalls, and a 180/240 finish with oil on skin.
Prep before the first bead
Acrylic does not forgive oily keratin.
Sanitize the work area and your hands per Chapter 5 and WAC 308-20-110. Wash with soap and warm water (or an equally effective agent) before the client. Client skin is washed, wiped, or sprayed before service. Do not begin an enhancement on visible open sores, inflamed skin, rash, or parasitic infestation — WAC 308-20-110 already stops those services. Chapter 9 still owns infectious disease. Product is not a bandage.
Remove polish and any old product that does not belong under a new overlay. Polish film is a barrier. So is leftover oil, sunscreen, and lotion. Physical removal of old film is not polymerization; it is getting the plate clean enough for adhesion.
Push the cuticle — gently retract eponychium and remaining cuticle from the plate — so you can see keratin. You are not cutting living tissue. You are clearing the plate so product can stop short of living skin. A cuticle jammed with monomer on day one looks grown in and lifts as the plate grows.
Lightly dehydrate the plate. A dehydrator removes surface oil and residual moisture so adhesion can occur. It is not primer and not monomer. Do not oil first. Cuticle oil is an emollient for the end of the visit. A Bellevue client who just used hand cream still needs that cream off the plate before the first bead.
Primer follows the manufacturer. Acid primer commonly contains methacrylic acid. It is corrosive. It belongs on the nail plate only, in a tiny amount. It is not for living skin. A burn on eponychium or lateral folds is a chemical injury, not proof of extra stick. Acid-free primer still stays on the plate. If the system says no primer, do not add methacrylic acid because a Kirkland client wanted insurance. Match the labeled primer to the labeled liquid and powder. On the practical, if primer is used it stays in its original labeled bottle.
Prep is the same adhesion story whether you then use a form or a tip. Skip it and the overlay will teach you about lifting in Section 16.3.
Forms or tips — then product
You still choose a foundation.
A nail form sits under the natural free edge so you can sculpt length in acrylic (Section 15.3). A tip is pre-formed plastic bonded with cyanoacrylate, then usually overlaid with acrylic (Section 15.1). Overlaying a tip is still acrylic application. Calling a glued tip sculpting does not change the practical assignment: the sculptured nail section is the form service.
After the form is snug or the tip is bonded and blended, acrylic is applied in zones, not as one dumped glob. The medium working bead from Section 16.1 is how those zones stay where you put them. A wet bead is how they run into living tissue.
Zones, apex, C-curve, sidewalls
Think of three placement zones:

Cuticle zone (proximal): a thin even layer that stops short of living eponychium. Thinning near the cuticle is structural, not optional fashion. A thick wedge at the proximal fold has nowhere to go as the nail grows. It lifts, it packs the fold, and it looks like a ledge. Do not flood the eponychium. A medium bead placed and guided is how you thin this zone. A wet bead is how you flood it.

Stress area (where the natural free edge meets the overlay or extension): this is where leverage tries to snap the nail. The apex — the highest point of the upper arch — belongs over the stress area, not in a blob at the cuticle and not at the very end of a stiletto. Product is thickest at the apex and thins toward the cuticle and toward the free-edge tip.

Free-edge zone: builds length on a form, or covers and shapes the tip's extension. This is also where you establish the C-curve — the sidewall-to-sidewall arch you see looking into the free edge. A balanced C-curve adds strength. A flat paddle snaps. An over-pinched tube crushes the hyponychium.
Sidewalls keep product on the plate. Acrylic that overlaps living lateral folds pinches, lifts, and puts monomer on tissue. File and place so the overlay follows the natural sidewall. Do not bury the folds in product because a Tacoma client wanted extra hold.
Smile line, upper arch, and lower arch from Chapter 15 still apply on a pink-and-white sculpt. One-color overlays still have an apex and a C-curve even if there is no French smile. Let each bead set enough to hold before you pile the next. Chasing a running wet bead into the fold is not melting. It is flooding.
On a form sculpt, the free-edge bead must travel beyond the natural free edge or you built an overlay, not the practical extension. On a tip overlay, you are coating plastic and plate; you still thin at the cuticle, still place an apex, and still keep sidewalls on keratin.
Finish file 180/240, then oil
Once the overlay has polymerized, finish filing is physical reduction of already-formed product. Typical trained finish grits are 180 then 240 on the enhancement surface: 180 to refine shape, 240 to smooth. An 80-grit bulk board is for thick product reduction, not a first pass on a thin cuticle zone beside living skin. Stay on polymer. Do not file the natural plate thin at the proximal margin. Do not e-file the living lateral fold to clean the sidewall.
Shape the free edge. Check C-curve and apex from the side and from the end. Dust is soil — clean it from the station. Porous files that cannot be disinfected are still single-use under WAC 308-20-110.
Oil is aftercare for living skin and remaining cuticle, not a primer. Oil the folds after the overlay is shaped and, if you are polishing, after polish or as your finish sequence directs. Do not oil the unsealed underside of a lifting overlay and send the client out. Do not oil the plate and then apply another bead.
On the practical, you still work inside the 20-minute sculptured-nail window for application. Finish quality is part of that timed service. Removal is a separate 20-minute section (16.3).
Washington floor pictures
Seattle skip-prep. A client arrives from the gym. The tech dehydrates nothing, primes nothing, and wonders why day-four lifting started at the cuticle. Sanitize, remove barriers, push cuticle, dehydrate, primer as directed.
Tacoma acid flood. Methacrylic acid primer is painted around the proximal fold for grip. That is corrosive product on living skin. Plate only.
Spokane inverted apex. Thickness sits in a lump at the cuticle; the stress area is skinny. The nail breaks in a kitchen, not just on a rubric. Apex over the stress area; thin near the cuticle.
Everett sidewall bury. Product is packed onto the lateral folds so the C-curve looks wide. The folds blanch. Keep sidewalls on keratin.
Olympia 80-grit cuticle. The tech uses a coarse board until the proximal overlay and the natural plate are both paper. Finish 180/240 on product.
