17.3 Enhancement Troubleshooting

NIC Domain 7 does not only ask how to put product on. It asks whether you can name why an enhancement failed and what you must not do next. Washington layers the same judgment with RCW 18.16.020 (enhancements are inside manicurist scope), WAC 308-20-080(4)(b) (prep through removal for gel, powder, acrylic, wraps, and extensions), and WAC 308-20-110 (sanitation, manufacturer directions, banned MMA, refuse visible disease). Troubleshooting is not a medical diagnosis. It is a table decision: fix a mechanical cause, stop a chemical injury, or refuse and refer.

Never cover an infected nail. A lift is a pocket. A pocket that is yellow, moist, odorous, or debris-filled is a fungal-risk picture from Chapter 9. Gel, dip, and acrylic are not lids you glue onto tinea unguium.

Read the failure before you add product

Every enhancement — tip, wrap, acrylic, soft gel, hard gel, hybrid, or dip — needs a clean, dry plate, product on keratin only, a complete chemical set, and a shape that does not lever the nail. When something fails, name the failure in plain language:

  • Where is it (cuticle, sidewalls, free edge, apex)?
  • When did it start (day one versus week three)?
  • What do you see (air, moisture, stain, crack, redness of living skin)?

Day-one lifting at the proximal edge is usually product on skin, oil left on the plate, or flooding the cuticle. Week-three lifting at the grow-out line with a clean, dry pocket can be ordinary growth plus a missed fill. Week-two lifting with yellow crumb is not a fill. It is a stop.

The troubleshooting map

Use this table as the Domain 7 map. Causes can stack. The first correct move is still the one that does not trap moisture or injure tissue.

Lifting, bubbles, wrinkles, peels, cracks, yellowing

Lifting is product separating from the plate or from itself (adhesion versus cohesion from Chapter 10). A dry, clean lift on an otherwise healthy nail can be filed off and replaced after honest prep. A lift that hid water is a greenhouse. Do not "spot fill" a greenhouse.

Bubbling is air. Shaking a gel bottle like polish injects bubbles. Dipping a wet, dripping nail into powder traps air and moisture. Thick gel skins over in the lamp while the center stays unset. Work thinner. Stop whipping bottles.

Wrinkling is a gel-surface failure: the film skins while the under-layer is still moving, or the coat was a puddle. It is often cousin to undercure. It is not a reason to file a still-soft coat into the folds.

Peeling in sheets often means the overlay never bonded (oil, lotion, sunscreen) or the stack was incompatible. Mixing a soak-off color over an uncured hard gel, or dip resin over wet EMA, is that stack.

Cracking across the apex is often too little structure for the length, or a thin spot from overfiling. A crack that reaches a red, painful bed is a stop, not a wrap over inflammation.

Yellowing can be cosmetic stain or a disease clue. Nicotine, dark polish without base, and aged product stain. A thick yellow crumbly plate with lift is Chapter 9 until proven otherwise. You do not get to decide it is "just stain" by covering it.

Fungus under a lift: refuse, refer

This is the high-yield safety item. When an enhancement lifts and the pocket shows debris, odor, moisture, or yellow-green discoloration, treat it as infectious risk. Tinea unguium (onychomycosis) was already a refuse-and-refer finding in Chapter 9. WAC 308-20-110(1)(e) does not need a Latin name: inflamed skin, rash, or an open, compromised unit stops the service.

Refuse. Do not cover. Refer to a physician. You may gently remove product if it can be done without digging, tearing, or treating the nail as a medical debridement — and only if you can do so without serving an obviously infected unit. If the fold is red, swollen, or draining, you do not start a soak-off for fun. You stop. You do not diagnose. You do not sell tea-tree gel as a cure.

Salon scenario — Tacoma seal. A Tacoma client wants the lift "glued down for a wedding." The pocket is yellow. You refuse. A wedding is not a WAC exception.

Allergy, MMA, over-thinning, heat

Allergic contact dermatitis from gels, cyanoacrylate dip resins, activators, or dust shows as itchy, red, sometimes vesicular skin around the nails or on the tech's own fingers and eyelids (Chapter 6). Stop the service. Do not diagnose the exact chemical. Document what was used. Refer. Patch testing is a physician task; Chapter 308-20 WAC does not create a manicurist patch-test statute. Keep uncured gel and resin off skin so you are not the next case.

MMA damage is the rigid, overly aggressive plastic from 100% liquid MMA monomer, prohibited in Washington under WAC 308-20-110(15). It is associated with nail trauma, difficult removal, and sensitization. It is not the professional fix for a chronic lifter. EMA systems and published gels and dips are the legal chemistries you were trained on. If a kit smells like industrial solvent and the nails are fused into yellow armor, do not add more. Refer damaged nails; do not pry MMA off like a bottle cap.

Over-thinning the plate during prep, tip blending, hard-gel file-off, or dip-seal removal weakens keratin. Thin plates heat, flex, and hurt. They also lift because there is nothing left to hold product. Stop when the product is gone. Natural nail is not bulk you had to remove to make the overlay "look flush."

Heat spikes during LED/UV cure: pull the hand from the lamp, cool, evaluate. Do not diagnose a burn as infection. A blister is an injury. More gel is not a dressing you are licensed to prescribe.

Jars, brands, sanitation, and scope

Dip jar contamination is both a troubleshooting cause (odd cure, contamination in the powder, client-to-client soil) and a WAC break. Sprinkle or portion. Never dump used powder back. Remaining portion stays uncontaminated.

Mixing brands produces undercure, peeling, heat, and allergy because photoinitiators, peroxide levels, and cyanoacrylate activators are not generic water. WAC 308-20-110(4)(a) already told you to follow manufacturer directions. A dual system that the manufacturer published is a system. A Kirkland mash-up is not.

Sanitation still holds while you troubleshoot: labeled closed containers, no redipping, porous files discarded, implements cleaned and disinfected, hands washed before the next client. Filing a failed acrylic into a cloud and then serving the next guest with the same dusty band is a new problem, not a solution to the first one.

Scope still holds. A Washington manicurist repairs, fills, and removes these enhancements. A cosmetologist without that license does not troubleshoot gel or dip by offering a "quick patch." Out of scope also includes diagnosing disease, medical treatment, and using banned MMA or methylene chloride as the secret remover.

Salon scenario — Seattle mix. Gel color from one line, builder from another, lamp from a drawer. Lifting and wrinkling follow. One system, matching lamp.

Salon scenario — Spokane MMA. A seller promises never-break nails. WAC 308-20-110(15) already answered. Rigidity that traumatizes the plate is damage, not quality.

Salon scenario — Bellevue e-file. A tech blends a dip fill until the natural plate is translucent and hot. That is over-thinning, not adhesion.

Salon scenario — Olympia heat. The client yanks, then the tech says the redness is an infection starting. It is a heat spike until a physician says otherwise. You do not diagnose. You stop and cool.

Salon scenario — Yakima dump-back. Used dip powder returns to the jar, then three clients lift and itch. Remaining-portion contamination is the cause you should have prevented.

Exam translation: name the failure, fix prep and chemistry, refuse fungus under a lift, stop allergy and MMA and heat-spike injuries, do not thin the plate to death, do not mix brands, do not contaminate the jar, and never cover an infected nail.
