Texas tests Area 9 — Special Occupancies on the NEC Knowledge part. Hazardous (classified) locations are pure code-recall: you must identify the Class/Division, pick the permitted wiring method, and locate the required seals. Expect 3–5 questions touching Articles 500–501, 511, or 514.

The Class/Division System (NEC 500.5)

Article 500 organizes hazards by Class (the type of hazard) and Division (the likelihood the hazard is present). A parallel Zone system in Articles 505 (Class I) and 506 (dust/fibers) is an IEC-aligned alternative the exam treats as recall only.

Zone equivalents (Articles 505/506): Class I Zones 0/1/2 map to continuous/normal/abnormal gas presence; dust Zones 20/21/22 follow the same continuum. Where a Zone system is installed, it replaces the Division system for that area — you cannot mix the two in the same location.

Class I Wiring Methods — 501.10

In Class I, Division 1, 501.10(A) permits only:

  • Threaded rigid metal conduit (RMC) or threaded steel IMC with explosionproof fittings, made up wrenchtight
  • Type MI cable with fittings listed for the location
  • Type MC-HL, TC-ER-HL, and Type P cable — restricted industrial establishments only, with listed fittings

In Class I, Division 2, 501.10(B) expands to include EMT, FMC, LFMC, Type MC, TC, and PLTC cables with listed fittings, plus the Division 1 methods.

Sealing Requirements — 501.15

Seals serve two purposes: prevent passage of gases/vapors through the raceway, and confine an internal explosion to the sealed enclosure so pressure piling cannot propagate.

  • 501.15(A)(1) — At explosionproof enclosures: a conduit seal within 18 in. of any explosionproof enclosure containing arcing/sparking devices, or where the conduit is trade size 2 or larger at terminals/splices. Factory-sealed equipment is exempt.
  • 501.15(A)(4) — Boundary seals: a seal in each conduit run leaving a Division 1 location, installed on either side within 10 ft of the boundary, with no unions/boxes between seal and boundary.

Scenario: A motor starter in a Class I, Division 1 pump room contains a contactor (arcing device). RMC runs from the starter through the Division 1 boundary into an unclassified corridor. You need (1) an explosionproof seal within 18 in. of the starter enclosure, and (2) a boundary seal within 10 ft of where the conduit crosses from Division 1 to unclassified. Only threaded couplings or explosionproof fittings are permitted between the seal and the starter.

Article 511 — Commercial Garages

Table 511.3(C) classifies garage pits for heavier-than-air fuels. In a major repair garage (Class I liquids transferred/dispensed), an unventilated pit is Class I, Division 1; a pit ventilated at ≥1 cfm/ft² of floor area with suction within 12 in. of the floor is Class I, Division 2. In a minor repair garage, an unventilated pit is Division 2. Per 511.4, wiring in these classified spaces follows Article 501 Part II (501.10 methods) and equipment follows Part III. Sealing per 511.9 follows 501.15 and applies to horizontal as well as vertical boundaries.

Article 514 — Motor Fuel Dispensing

Dispenser areas are classified under 514.3. Key installation rules:

  • 514.8 underground wiring: threaded RMC or threaded IMC; a seal is required within 10 ft of where the raceway emerges above grade, with no unions/boxes between seal and emergence point.
  • 514.9 seals at the dispenser: each conduit entering or leaving a dispenser must have a listed seal as the first fitting after the conduit emerges from earth/concrete — in addition to the Article 501.15 boundary seals.
  • 514.11 circuit disconnect: each circuit to dispensing equipment must have a disconnect that opens all conductors including the neutral, located remote from the dispensers.
