The NEC's nine-chapter structure is your map: if you know which chapter covers which topic, you cut your search space from 900+ pages to 100–150 pages in one step. Then the article numbering gets you to the right article, and the section numbering gets you to the exact rule.

The NEC is organized so that general rules come first, then they are modified by special rules for specific situations. Understanding this layering is essential because Chapters 5–7 can override or supplement the general requirements in Chapters 1–4.

Article and Section Numbering

The NEC uses a decimal numbering system. Understanding it lets you parse any reference instantly:

  • Article number (before the decimal): identifies the article. The first digit tells you the chapter. Article 250 → Chapter 2. Article 430 → Chapter 4. Article 517 → Chapter 5.
  • Section number (after the decimal): identifies the section within that article. 250.4 = Article 250, Section 4.
  • Subsection (letter in parentheses): 250.4(A) = Section 250.4, subsection A.
  • Sub-subsection (number in parentheses): 250.4(A)(1) = the first numbered item under subsection A.
  • Point (lowercase letter): 250.4(A)(1)(a) = the most granular level.

Mandatory Rules vs. Informational Notes (Section 90.5)

Informational Notes appear directly after the rule they explain and cannot contain requirements, interpretations, or recommendations. They are not enforceable. The exam may test this by presenting an Informational Note as if it were a requirement—you must recognize it is not.

Informative Annexes (A through K) are also explanatory material. The most exam-relevant are:

  • Annex C — Conduit and tubing fill tables for same-size conductors (the quick-reference tables you will use for raceway fill questions).
  • Annex D — Worked examples, including dwelling unit load calculations and feeder calculations (invaluable for the Calculations part).
  • Annex I — Recommended tightening torque tables from UL 486A-486B (referenced in 110.14(D)).

Annexes are not part of the enforceable Code. If a question asks what the Code requires and the only source is an Annex, the answer is that the Annex is informational.
