What makes a sentence fragment incomplete?

It is punctuated as a sentence but lacks a complete independent thought, often because it has no subject, no complete verb, or begins with a dependent word without a main clause.

How can you test whether a clause is a complete sentence?

Check that it has a subject and a complete predicate and can stand alone as a finished thought. A phrase that only tells when, why, or under what condition usually needs a main clause.

What is a run-on sentence?

It joins independent clauses without acceptable punctuation or a coordinating structure. Separate the clauses with a period or semicolon, or use a comma plus a coordinating conjunction.

Why is a comma alone usually insufficient between two independent clauses?

It creates a comma splice. Add an appropriate coordinating conjunction after the comma, or use a period or semicolon instead.

What is a misplaced modifier?

It is a descriptive word or phrase positioned so that it appears to modify the wrong part of the sentence. Place the modifier next to the word or action it actually describes.

What is a dangling modifier?

It is an introductory description whose intended actor is missing from the main clause. Make the performer of the introductory action the subject that follows.

What is a squinting modifier?

It sits between two sentence elements and could modify either one. Move it so its intended relationship is unmistakable.

How do you repair an ambiguous pronoun?

Replace the pronoun with the specific person, object, or role when more than one antecedent is possible. A reader should not have to guess who “he,” “she,” “they,” or “it” means.

Which verb agrees with “each of the reports”: is or are?

Use “is.” The subject “each” is singular; the plural noun inside the prepositional phrase does not control the verb.

Why should items in a series use parallel structure?

Matching grammatical forms make the relationship among the items clear. For example, use three verbs in the same form rather than mixing a verb, a noun, and a fragment.

What is the clearest way to describe a sequence of completed events?

Present the actions in a logical order and use consistent verb tense unless the timing genuinely changes. Clear sequencing prevents readers from confusing which event occurred first.

What does “impartial” mean?

Fair and not favoring one side. In context, an impartial decision is based on relevant evidence rather than personal preference.

What does “explicit” mean?

Clearly and directly stated, leaving little room for uncertainty. It is the opposite of merely implied.

What does “infer” mean?

To reach a reasonable conclusion from information or evidence rather than from a direct statement.

What does “concise” mean?

Brief and clearly expressed without unnecessary words. Concise does not mean incomplete.

What does “feasible” mean?

Possible and practical to carry out. A feasible plan can realistically be completed under the stated conditions.

What does “subsequent” mean?

Occurring later or following another event. It describes order, not necessarily cause.

What does “credible” mean?

Believable or worthy of trust. Credibility can be evaluated from consistency, knowledge, and supporting evidence.

What does “deteriorate” mean?

To become worse in condition, quality, or function over time.

What does “vicinity” mean?

The nearby or surrounding area. It does not necessarily mean one exact location.

What does “comply” mean?

To act in accordance with a request, rule, or requirement.

What does “discrepancy” mean?

A difference or inconsistency between facts, records, statements, or expected results.

How is “occurrence” spelled?

Occurrence: double c, double r. Link it to “occur,” then add “-rence.”

How is “separate” spelled?

Separate: sep-a-rate. The middle vowel is “a,” not “e.”

How is “necessary” spelled?

Necessary: one c and two s letters.

How is “immediately” spelled?

Immediately: immediate + ly. Keep the final “e” in “immediate” before adding “-ly.”

How is “maintenance” spelled?

Maintenance: maint-e-nance. It is not spelled “maintainance.”

How is “privilege” spelled?

Privilege: no “d” before the “g,” and the ending is “-lege.”

How is “relevant” spelled?

Relevant: rel-e-vant. The ending is “-ant,” not “-ent.”

How is “surveillance” spelled?

Surveillance: sur-veil-lance. It contains “veil” and a double l.

How is “accommodate” spelled?

Accommodate: double c and double m.

How is “possession” spelled?

Possession: double s after “po” and double s in the “-ssion” ending.

How is the noun “license” spelled in American English?

License: l-i-c-e-n-s-e. In American English, this spelling is used for both the noun and the verb.

Why is “The witness identified the vehicle. Which left the area.” a sentence fragment?

“Which left the area” is a dependent relative clause and cannot stand alone. Attach it to the first clause: “The witness identified the vehicle, which left the area.”

What is a passage's main idea?

The central point the passage develops as a whole. It should cover the passage's overall purpose without being broader or narrower than the text.

How is a supporting detail different from the main idea?

A supporting detail supplies an example, fact, reason, or explanation for the central point. It matters to the passage but does not summarize the whole passage.

What makes an inference supported?

It follows logically from facts or relationships in the passage. A plausible real-world idea is not enough if the passage does not support it.

What should you do when a reading question asks what is explicitly stated?

Locate the relevant sentence or section and choose the answer that accurately restates it. Do not replace a direct detail with a broader inference.

How should outside knowledge be used on a PELLETB reading passage?

Do not let it override the text. POST says the passage contains the information needed to answer its questions, so select the answer supported by that passage.

How do sequence words help a reader?

Words such as first, before, afterward, and finally establish the order of events or steps. Use them to build a quick timeline when order matters.

Why does “after” not automatically prove causation?

It establishes chronology only. To conclude that one event caused another, the passage must provide a causal connection rather than mere sequence.

What do contrast signals such as “however” and “although” indicate?

They alert the reader that the next idea qualifies, limits, or opposes the preceding idea. The contrast often reveals the author's central distinction.

What do cause-and-effect signals such as “because” and “therefore” show?

They identify a stated reason, result, or conclusion. Confirm which clause is the cause and which is the effect before choosing an answer.

How do you resolve what “this” or “they” refers to in a passage?

Look backward for the nearest grammatically and logically compatible noun or idea, then substitute it into the sentence to see whether the meaning remains coherent.

How can an absolute word make an answer choice too strong?

Words such as always, never, only, and completely claim more than qualified language such as often, may, or generally. Match the strength of the answer to the strength of the passage.

What is the best way to answer a question about an exception?

Identify the general rule first, then find the sentence that limits it or names the exception. Do not select an ordinary example of the rule.

How can paragraph purpose help with a long passage?

Briefly label what each paragraph does—introduces, explains, contrasts, gives evidence, or concludes. Those labels make it easier to locate support for a question.

What should you do when two reading answers both sound reasonable?

Compare each choice with the exact passage language. Prefer the one fully supported without adding assumptions; eliminate a choice that is only partly true or answers a different question.

What does “corroborate” mean?

To confirm or support a statement, fact, or finding with additional evidence or information.

What is an efficient response to a difficult reading item?

Eliminate choices contradicted or unsupported by the passage, select the best remaining answer, and move on if the item is consuming disproportionate time. POST advises answering all questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What written exam does CHP currently use for Officer applicants?

CHP states that its written exam is the California POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery, or PELLETB. Applicants must take the exam with CHP each time they apply; CHP does not accept passing scores from other agencies.

What sections are on the current PELLETB?

The current test has clarity, vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension sections. California POST removed the CLOZE sub-test effective January 1, 2025.

How many questions are on the current PELLETB?

POST publishes ranges rather than one fixed total: each of the three writing sub-tests has 15–18 items, for 45–54 writing items, and reading comprehension has 20–24 items.

How long is the PELLETB?

California POST says the current total administration takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes: 30 minutes of instructions and 1 hour and 45 minutes of exam time.

What T-score does CHP require?

CHP's current public written-exam page says applicants must earn a passing score but does not state a numeric cutoff. POST does not impose one statewide passing score; it recommends that agencies select a T-score cutoff of 42 or higher, and each agency sets its own standard.

When can I retake the PELLETB?

CHP and POST state that applicants must wait 30 calendar days and may retest on the 31st day after the last administration. The rule applies even when the tests are given by different agencies.

How are these 50 flashcards divided among the four current sub-tests?

The set has 12 clarity, 12 vocabulary, 11 spelling, and 15 reading-comprehension cards. That whole-card allocation scales the official 15–18, 15–18, 15–18, and 20–24 item ranges to 50 cards; because the three writing ranges are equal, the one-card rounding difference among them does not imply a different official weight.
