Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Civil Service Basic Skills Examination?

A generic entry-level test of cognitive skills used by federal, state, and local civil service commissions to screen applicants for government positions. The five core areas are verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics, logical reasoning, and spelling/grammar. Exam names and formats vary by jurisdiction, but the skills tested are consistent.

What score do I need to pass?

The passing score is typically 70%, but final selection usually comes from rank order on a scored eligibility list, so you need to score well above the cutoff to be reachable. Federal USA Hire assessments use category ratings rather than a strict pass/fail.

Do veterans get a preference?

Yes. Under federal law, eligible veterans receive 5 preference points added to their passing exam score, and veterans with service-connected disabilities receive 10 points. Many states have parallel programs. Preference applies after passing and does not lower the cutoff.

What jobs use the civil service basic skills exam?

Many entry-level government roles: administrative assistants, program clerks, park rangers, firefighters, correctional officers, transportation security officers, and other state and municipal positions. The same core skills test screens for all of them, often with role-specific assessments added.

How long should I study?

Plan 20-40 hours over 4-8 weeks. Spend the most time on math word problems and vocabulary in context, and take at least two timed full-length practice tests to build pacing of about one minute per question.
