The Predict-Then-Match Method

The instinctive approach — reading each option into the blank and asking which sounds best — is slow and unreliable, because two or three options usually sound acceptable. The efficient method reverses the order:

1. Read the complete sentence, including everything after the blank.
2. Predict what the missing word must mean, in your own words. Do not look at the options yet.
3. Match your prediction against the options and eliminate everything inconsistent with it.
4. Check grammar — part of speech, number, tense, preposition — on whatever survives.

Step 2 is the one candidates skip, and it is the one that does the work.

Connector Logic: The Direction of a Sentence

Most single-blank items are decided by whether the two halves of the sentence agree or oppose. The connector tells you which.

Example. Although the new surface miner reduced dust levels sharply, output at the face ______ below the planned target.

The word although demands a contrast with the positive first clause, so the second clause must be negative. Predict something like stayed or fell. An option such as rose or surged is eliminated on logic alone, without any grammatical analysis.

Example. The seam proved unexpectedly thin; the project was ______ deferred.

A semicolon with no contrast marker signals continuation and consequence. Predict therefore or accordingly.

Grammar Filters

Once the sense is fixed, grammar decides among survivors.

• Part of speech. A blank after the and before a noun needs an adjective; a blank after a preposition needs a noun or gerund.
• Subject-verb agreement. A singular subject requires a singular verb; watch intervening phrases, as in the list of approved vendors is displayed.
• Tense consistency. The blank's tense must match the surrounding narrative.
• Countability. Use fewer and many with countable nouns, less and much with uncountable ones. Fewer stoppages but less downtime.
• Article. Use a before a consonant sound and an before a vowel sound. It is an hour because the h is silent, and a university because the u sounds like yoo.

Prepositional Collocation

A large share of fill-in-the-blank items test which preposition follows a given word. These pairings are conventional and must simply be learned.

Two pairs worth special attention because they are routinely confused: compare to likens two unlike things, while compare with examines similarities and differences between comparable ones; and differ from applies to things, while differ with applies to disagreeing with a person.

Cloze Passages

A cloze test removes several words from a connected passage. The additional skill it demands is coherence across sentences, not just within one.

1. Read the whole passage once before filling anything. The first blank is often only decidable from information given three sentences later.
2. Fill the easiest blanks first. Each filled blank constrains the surrounding ones.
3. Track the pronouns and referents. A pronoun must agree with an antecedent already established.
4. Keep the register consistent. A formal passage will not suddenly take a colloquial verb.
5. Re-read the completed passage. A choice that works locally but breaks the passage's logic is wrong.

Double-Blank Sentence Completion

When a sentence has two blanks, do not work left to right by default. Instead:

1. Identify which blank is more constrained — usually the one attached to a connector, a fixed collocation, or a clear contrast.
2. Eliminate on that blank alone. This typically removes two or three options at once.
3. Test the remaining one or two options on the second blank.

Example. Despite the ______ evidence of subsidence above the old workings, the contractor remained ______ that the surface would hold.

The first blank sits after despite, so the evidence must be strong enough to make the contractor's position surprising. Predict mounting or compelling. The second blank must then oppose that evidence, so predict confident or insistent. An option pairing scant with confident fails, because scant evidence would make confidence unsurprising and the word despite would have nothing to do.

Exam Technique

Set a ceiling of about thirty seconds per item. English questions on the CIL Paper-I are among the fastest on the paper, and the time saved is what funds the calculation-heavy Paper-II. Since there is no negative marking, a blank narrowed to two plausible options should always be answered on the stronger reading rather than left.
