About the NHA CBCS Exam

The NHA CBCS exam is an NCCA-accredited, entry-level certification for medical billing and coding specialists. It validates competence across the full revenue cycle: regulatory compliance and HIPAA, insurance eligibility and payer rules, ICD-10-CM/CPT/HCPCS coding with proper modifier and sequencing logic, and billing/reimbursement workflows including the CMS-1500 and UB-04, EDI transactions, NCCI edits, denial management, and the Medicare appeals process. CBCS-certified specialists work in physician offices, outpatient clinics, billing companies, and hospital business offices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CBCS vocabulary game free?

Yes. The game is free to play with no sign-up. Signing in adds AI explanations for any term.

How do the CBCS vocabulary games work?

There are 4 games built on 20 CBCS terms. In Guess the Term, a clue describes one term and you have six tries to spell it, with green, yellow and gray letters showing how close you are. In Term Match, six terms appear as colored tiles; swap neighbors to line up three or more of the same term, and each match shows what the term means. In Term Pairs, twelve face-down cards hide six pairs of terms; flip two at a time to find each pair, and every pair you find shows what the term means. In Term Search, five terms hide in a grid of letters, reading across, down or diagonally; drag across a term to circle it, and each term you find shows what it means.

Where do the CBCS terms come from?

OpenExamPrep researched each term from the NHA / PSI Testing Centers / Live Remote Proctoring content outline and primary sources, listed under Sources on this page. The game is independent study material, not an official exam resource.

How many questions are on the NHA CBCS exam?

The CBCS exam has 125 total items: 100 scored multiple-choice questions plus 25 unscored pretest items, delivered over a 3-hour testing window. Pretest items are not identified during the exam, so answer every question carefully.

What score do I need to pass the NHA CBCS exam?

NHA uses scaled scoring on a 200–500 scale, with 390 as the passing standard for handbook-covered exams including CBCS. Scaled scoring corrects for minor difficulty differences between exam versions.
