4.3 Nutrition Education (N07), Mindful Eating (N08) & Food Preparation (N10)
Key Takeaways
- N07 Nutrition Education requires at least one of four offerings - chef-led cooking demonstrations, dietitian-led education sessions, individual nutrition consultations, or gardening workshops on edible plants - offered at no cost at least quarterly.
- N08 Part 1 Option 1 requires a dedicated eating space within a 650 ft (200 m) walk distance of the project boundary, seating at least 25% of regular occupants at peak occupancy.
- N08 Part 1 Option 2 is satisfied instead by giving eligible employees and students a daily meal break of at least 30 minutes.
- N10 Food Preparation requires seven amenities in at least one dedicated eating area within a 650 ft (200 m) walk distance - cold storage, countertop, sink with dish and hand washing amenities, a reheating device, dedicated storage, reusable non-plastic dishware and utensils, and garbage, recycling or compost bins.
- For dwelling units N10 requires a countertop, sink, refrigerator, cabinets and a stove with a hood vented directly outdoors.
4.3 Nutrition Education (N07), Mindful Eating (N08) & Food Preparation (N10)
Core Exam Takeaway: N07 Nutrition Education (1 pt) = quarterly, at no cost, one of four defined offerings. N08 Mindful Eating (2 pt / Core 1 pt) = a dedicated eating space within 650 ft (200 m) walk distance seating 25% of regular occupants at peak, or a 30-minute daily meal break. N10 Food Preparation (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt) = the seven amenities. Note the gap: N09 Special Diets sits between N08 and N10 and is covered in section 4.4 with the sourcing features.
Why the act of eating is a design problem
Eating at a desk while working — "desktop dining" — separates food from attention. Cephalic-phase digestive responses are triggered by seeing, smelling and attending to food; when attention is elsewhere, satiety signalling is delayed and consumption rises. A dedicated space, a protected break and the equipment to prepare a real meal are the three levers WELL pulls, and each is a separate feature.
Feature N07: Nutrition Education — Optimization (1 pt / WELL Core 1 pt)
Intent: support a healthy eating pattern by increasing nutritional knowledge and food literacy.
N07 Part 1 — Provide Nutrition Education
At least one of the following is offered in person or virtually to regular occupants at no cost, on a quarterly basis at minimum:
- (a) Cooking demonstrations led by chef-instructors that include fruits and/or vegetables, demonstrate cooking skills and integrate hands-on learning opportunities.
- (b) Nutrition or dietary education sessions led by an accredited dietitian or accredited nutritionist.
- (c) Individual nutrition consultations led by an accredited dietitian or accredited nutritionist.
- (d) Gardening or planting workshops focused on edible plants that integrate hands-on learning opportunities.
WELL Core guidance: whole building — education must be made available to all tenants.
[!TIP] Four qualifiers carry the point: quarterly minimum, no cost, regular occupants, and accredited practitioners for options (b) and (c). Options (a) and (d) both require hands-on learning — a lecture about cooking does not satisfy (a). Note the deliberate overlap with N12 Food Production: a project with a garden can run option (d) in it and earn both features from one investment.
Feature N08: Mindful Eating — Optimization (2 pt / WELL Core 1 pt)
Intent: encourage mindful eating behaviors and communal dining opportunities.
N08 Part 1 — Support Mindful Eating
For all spaces except dwelling units.
Option 1: Dedicated eating space. A dedicated eating space located within a 650 ft (200 m) walk distance of the project boundary that:
- (a) Contains tables and chairs to accommodate at least 25% of regular occupants at peak occupancy. If multiple dedicated eating spaces are present, the combined seating must accommodate at least 25% of regular occupants at peak occupancy.
- (b) Provides protection from environmental elements (direct sunlight, rain, wind) or is in a climate-controlled space.
- (c) Accommodates a variety of seating types, including small group (up to 4 people) and large group (more than 4 people) seating.
Option 2: Daily meal breaks. Eligible employees and students (as applicable) have a daily meal break of at least 30 minutes.
WELL Core guidance: meet the dedicated eating space requirements for building management staff and the daily meal break requirements for direct staff. To earn an additional point, also meet the dedicated eating space requirements in leased spaces or in non-leased spaces accessible to tenants.

[!IMPORTANT] The 650 ft (200 m) walk distance from the project boundary means the eating space may sit outside the boundary. This is one of WELL's explicit project boundary allowances: the distance is measured along a pedestrian-accessible path from a functional building entrance, ignoring elevation change, and a space located outside the boundary is not subject to other WELL features. A café across the street can satisfy N08 Option 1.
[!WARNING] WELL does not require dining spaces to be acoustically or visually insulated from workstations, to have daylight access, or to meet an NRC target. Those are sound design instincts, but N08's requirements are the three listed above. Acoustic zoning belongs to the Sound concept (S01 Sound Mapping), and views and daylight to the Light and Mind concepts.
Feature N10: Food Preparation — Optimization (1 pt / WELL Core 0.5 pt)
Intent: provide space and supportive amenities for the preparation of meals on-site. Note the modest ambition in WELL's own summary: to support the reassembly or reheating of meals on-site.
N10 Part 1 — Provide Meal Support
For all spaces except dwelling units and commercial kitchen spaces. The following seven amenities are provided in a quantity that meets employee demand, in at least one dedicated eating area within a 650 ft (200 m) walk distance of the project boundary:
- Cold storage
- Countertop surface
- Sink and amenities for dish and hand washing
- Device for reheating food (e.g., toaster oven, microwave)
- Dedicated cabinets or storage units available for employee use
- Reusable, non-plastic plates, bowls, cups and utensils, including spoons, forks and knives
- Cans/bins for garbage, recycling and/or compost
For dwelling units, five amenities: countertop surface; sink; refrigerator; cabinets; and a stove with hood vented directly to the outdoors.
For commercial kitchen spaces, for primary and secondary schools: the space contains proper kitchen equipment and infrastructure to prepare and serve meals on-site, and on school days at least one meal is prepared and served on-site.
WELL Core guidance: non-leased spaces. To earn an additional point, provide amenities sized for tenant capacity in leased spaces or non-leased spaces accessible to tenants.
[!WARNING] N10 sets no capacity formula — no litres of refrigeration per occupant, no number of microwaves per headcount. The standard is "a quantity that meets employee demand," which is a judgement documented by the project rather than a number to memorize. Two requirements are precise and testable: reusable and non-plastic dishware and utensils (single-use compostable service does not comply), and for dwelling units a stove hood vented directly to the outdoors — which is also how N10 dovetails with A11 Source Separation's dwelling-unit range hood requirements.
How N07, N08 and N10 compound
These three features are unusually cheap to earn together. A single dedicated eating area within 650 ft of the boundary can host the N08 seating and seating-variety requirements, carry the N10 amenity set, and serve as the venue for N07's quarterly chef-led demonstration. Layer N12 Food Production's garden nearby and the N07 gardening-workshop option becomes available too. For a WELL Core project, extending the same eating space and amenities into tenant-accessible areas earns two additional points — one from N08 and one from N10.
