10.3 Restorative Opportunities (M06), Restorative Spaces (M07) & Restorative Programming (M08)

Core Exam Takeaway: Three features, three resources: M06 (2 pt / Core 1 pt) protects time, M07 (1 pt / Core 2 pt) provides space, M08 (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt) provides programming. The numbers to hold: 11 consecutive hours off per 24-hour period, 24 consecutive hours off per 7-day period, 20 days paid time off, 8:30 a.m. school start, 30-minute nap break, one reclining option per 100 eligible employees, and M07's 75 ft² (7 m²) + 1 ft² per regular occupant, capped at 2,000 ft² (186 m²).

[!IMPORTANT] All three features reference designated quiet zones, which are defined not here but in S01 Sound Mapping Part 1. WELL states the cross-reference explicitly in both M06 and M08. A project cannot place a nap space or mindfulness session in a "quiet zone" it has not labelled under the Sound concept precondition.

Feature M06: Restorative Opportunities — Optimization (2 pt / WELL Core 1 pt)

Intent: support employee well-being by providing opportunities for recovery and restoration within and outside the workplace — sleep, breaks throughout the workday, and sufficient paid time off.

M06 Part 1 — Support Healthy Working Hours (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt)

Option 1: Working hours — for all employees:

  • (a) A minimum of 11 consecutive hours off from work per 24-hour period
  • (b) A minimum of 24 consecutive hours off from work per 7-day period
  • (c) For employees who engage in shift work:
    1. Work and communications are expected only for the duration of the employee's shift
    2. Employees are provided a minimum 48-hour advance notice of shift changes
  • (d) For employees who do not engage in shift work, work and communications are expected only during the organization's business hours in the local time zone

Option 2: Paid time off — for all eligible employees:

  • (a) Paid time off with a minimum of 20 days per calendar year, not including designated sick days or standard paid holidays
  • (b) Work and communications are not required and are discouraged during paid time off
  • (c) Sick, vacation, floating holiday, personal, rollover and all other employer-provided days off are clearly defined, addressing accrual policy, cap on rollover days allowed, and the date by when rollover days must be used

Option 3: Student start times — for students in secondary schools: the school day starts no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

M06 Part 2 — Provide Nap Policy and Space (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt)

Option 1: Nap policy — for all eligible employees: employees are allowed at least one nap or rest break of at least 30 minutes during the workday, not to be combined with designated time for meal breaks.

Option 2: Nap space — for all eligible employees:

  • (a) Access to at least one acoustically and visually separated environment located in a designated quiet zone
  • (b) At least one fully reclining furniture option — bed, daybed, couch, chair, cushioned roll-out mat, nap pod — for every 100 eligible employees

Note: projects can use one room as a combined nap space (M06) and restorative space (M07), but will only receive points for both features if all requirements for M06 Part 2 and M07 Part 1 have been met. WELL Core guidance: direct staff.

[!IMPORTANT] The 8:30 a.m. secondary school start time is one of WELL's most evidence-driven provisions. Adolescent circadian phase shifts later during puberty, so early start times impose chronic sleep restriction on a population that biologically cannot fall asleep earlier. Major paediatric bodies recommend 8:30 a.m. or later, and WELL adopts it verbatim. It is also memorable precisely because it sits inside a working-hours feature — expect it as a distractor-resistant item.

[!TIP] "Not to be combined with designated time for meal breaks" is the operative clause in Option 1: a project cannot re-label an existing lunch break as a nap break. And note the 48-hour shift-change notice in Option 1(c)(2) — unpredictable scheduling is itself a documented health exposure for shift workers, independent of hours worked.

Feature M07: Restorative Spaces — Optimization (1 pt / WELL Core 2 pt)

Intent: support access to spaces that promote restoration and relief from mental fatigue or stress.

M07 Part 1 — Provide Restorative Space

Option 1: Restorative space. At least one designated restorative space is available to all regular occupants. It may be indoor or outdoor, and may be a single space or multiple spaces, meeting:

  • (a) Designated for relaxation and restoration. The space may be multi-purpose but is not to be used for work.
  • (b) Totals at least 75 ft² (7 m²) plus 1 ft² (0.1 m²) per regular occupant, up to a maximum of 2,000 ft² (186 m²).
  • (c) Provides a restorative environment that considers at least five of the following seven:
    1. Lighting (e.g., dimmable light levels for indoor spaces)
    2. Sound (e.g., water feature, natural sounds, sound masking)
    3. Thermal comfort (e.g., sun-exposed and shaded areas for outdoor spaces)
    4. Seating arrangements accommodating a range of user preferences and activities (movable lightweight chairs, cushions, mats)
    5. Nature incorporation
    6. Calming colors, textures and forms
    7. Visual privacy
  • (d) Includes signage, education materials or other resources explaining the purpose and intended use of the space.

Note: if restorative space is provided only outdoors, it must be functional year-round.

Option 2: Workday breaks. The project encourages use of restorative spaces through paid breaks away from the workstation for all employees.

WELL Core guidance: meet the restorative space requirements for the whole building and the workday breaks requirement for direct staff.

     40 occupants  ->   75 +    40 =    115 sq ft
    300 occupants  ->   75 +   300 =    375 sq ft

Compare the three "base + per-occupant, with a cap" formulas in WELL:
     M07 restorative space 75 sq ft + 1 sq ft/occ, cap 2,000 sq ft
     V08 fitness facility 270 sq ft + 1 sq ft/occ, cap 10,000 sq ft
     N12 gardening space - 1 sq ft/occ, floor 200, cap 1,500
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

[!IMPORTANT] "May be multi-purpose but is not to be used for work" is M07's defining constraint. A quiet focus room where people take calls is a work space and cannot serve as the restorative space, no matter how calming its finishes. This is also why the combined nap and restorative room note exists: the two uses are compatible with each other, but neither is compatible with work.

[!TIP] Requirement (d) — signage explaining purpose and intended use — is the one projects omit, and it matters behaviourally: an unlabelled soft-furnished room in an office is read as an overflow meeting room within a week. Note also the year-round functionality rule for outdoor-only restorative space, which quietly rules out an uncovered roof terrace in a cold climate.

Feature M08: Restorative Programming — Optimization (1 pt / WELL Core 0.5 pt)

Intent: support access to programs that promote restoration and relief from mental fatigue or stress.

M08 Part 1 — Provide Restorative Programming

At least two of the following are offered to all eligible employees at no cost or subsidized by at least 50%:

  • (a) A mindfulness training course — e.g., an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course — offered live, in person or virtually, by a qualified mindfulness instructor at least twice a year, that:
    1. Defines mindfulness and its component parts
    2. Covers relevant research on mindfulness
    3. Teaches both formal practices (mindfulness meditation, yoga postures) and informal practices (mindful eating, mindful listening) that can be applied during the workday
  • (b) Mindfulness programming (guided meditation, yoga) offered live, in person or virtually, at least once a week in a designated quiet zone
  • (c) Digital mindfulness offerings (e.g., a guided meditation application). Employees have unlimited access to at least one digital offering and access to at least one designated quiet zone.

Note: refer to S01 Sound Mapping Part 1 for all designated quiet zones. WELL Core guidance: to earn this optimization, requirements should be met for direct staff.

[!TIP] Option (c) is the cheapest route in the cluster — a subscription to a meditation app plus a labelled quiet zone. But note that each of the three options requires a designated quiet zone or a qualified instructor, so M08 cannot be satisfied by an app alone. And WELL names MBSR and its eight-week structure specifically, which is worth recognizing: it is the most heavily studied structured mindfulness intervention in the clinical literature.

How the restoration cluster compounds

InvestmentFeatures it can satisfy
A labelled quiet zoneS01 (precondition), and the venue requirement in M06 Part 2 Option 2, M08 (b) and M08 (c)
One soft-furnished room with reclining furniture and signageM06 Part 2 Option 2 and M07 Part 1 Option 1 — both, if all requirements of each are met
A weekly yoga classM01 Part 1(a)(3) precondition option, M08 (b), and potentially V06 physical activity programming
A paid break policyM01 Part 1(a)(5), M06 Part 2 Option 1, M07 Part 1 Option 2

The Mind concept is unusually generous about overlap — M01 says so explicitly, and M06 Part 2's note spells out the nap-plus-restorative-space case. Because the concept offers 19 points against a 12-point cap, the strategic question is not what to buy but which overlaps to exploit.
