10.1 Mental Health Promotion (M01), Services (M03) & Education (M04)
Key Takeaways
- M01 Mental Health Promotion is a precondition requiring at least two of five listed offerings at no cost, plus annual and onboarding communication about all mental health benefits and resources.
- The five M01 options are quarterly education or awareness, annual trainings or courses, weekly mindfulness or restorative programming, a healthy working hours policy, and a dedicated restoration space with a break policy.
- M03 Mental Health Services is worth 4 points across screening, services and workplace support; the screening tool must address stress, depression, anxiety and substance use at minimum.
- M03 Part 2 requires mental health services covering clinical screening and referral, inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment including telemental health, and prescription medication coverage, plus organizational commitment to mental health parity.
- M04 Mental Health Education requires trainings at least twice per year for regular occupants covering at least two of three topics, and annual mental health training for all managers covering at least three of four topics.
10.1 Mental Health Promotion (M01), Services (M03) & Education (M04)
Core Exam Takeaway: Mind has two preconditions (M01, M02) and nine optimizations (M03–M11), and carries 9 scored exam questions. M03 Mental Health Services is the concept's largest optimization at 4 points. Watch the numbering carefully: M03 is Mental Health Services, M04 is Mental Health Education, and restorative spaces are M07 — a sequence candidates routinely scramble.
How the Mind concept is organized
| Cluster | Features | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Mental health provision | M01, M03, M04, M05 | Programs, insured services, education, stress assessment |
| Nature and place | M02, M09 | Biophilic design and access to nature |
| Restoration | M06, M07, M08 | Working hours, naps, restorative space, mindfulness programming |
| Substance use | M10, M11 | Tobacco cessation and substance use services |
Feature M01: Mental Health Promotion — Precondition
Intent: promote mental health and well-being through the provision of supportive programs, policies and resources.
M01 Part 1 — Promote Mental Health and Well-being
- (a) At least two of the following are available to all employees and students at no cost:
- Education or awareness efforts on mental health and well-being, offered quarterly, in person or virtually — e.g., a webcast on stress management, a presentation on mindfulness, an email on healthy sleep habits.
- Trainings or courses related to mental health and well-being, offered annually, in person or virtually — e.g., Mental Health First Aid, stress management training.
- Mindfulness or restorative programming, offered weekly, in person or virtually — e.g., ongoing access to a guided meditation application, weekly yoga classes.
- A policy that establishes healthy working hours, outlining the maximum hours to be worked per 24-hour and seven-day period.
- A dedicated space for restoration and relaxation, with an accompanying policy permitting breaks during work or school hours.
- (b) Annual communication — email, online module or in-person training — is provided to all regular occupants, and onboarding communications are provided to all new employees, specifically addressing all mental health and well-being benefits, resources and programs available through the project or organization.
Note: projects may achieve points in optimizations that overlap with strategies listed in Part 1(a). WELL Core guidance: meet for direct staff.
[!IMPORTANT] Note the three different cadences in Part 1(a): quarterly for awareness, annually for trainings, weekly for mindfulness programming. They are not interchangeable, and the exam will test which frequency attaches to which option. Also note the explicit double-counting permission: option 5's dedicated restoration space can also earn M07, and option 3's weekly mindfulness can also earn M08. WELL states this openly, so a project satisfies the precondition and buys optimization points with the same investment.
[!TIP] Requirement (b) is the one projects forget, because it is administrative rather than programmatic: annual communication to all regular occupants plus onboarding communication to all new employees. A benefit nobody knows about does not improve health outcomes, which is why WELL makes communication a precondition requirement rather than an optional nicety.
Feature M03: Mental Health Services — Optimization (4 pt / WELL Core 2 pt)
Intent: increase awareness of mental health conditions and offer supportive workplace services and accommodations for those living with such conditions.
M03 Part 1 — Offer Mental Health Screening (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt)
A clinical screening or self-assessment screening tool for common mental health conditions is available to all employees and students at no cost, and:
- (a) Addresses, at minimum, stress, depression, anxiety and substance use.
- (b) Provided confidentially, in person or virtually, through a licensed mental health professional, third party organization, online screening or health insurance offering.
- (c) Includes directed feedback and/or guidance on interpretation of results, and provides next steps for those who screen positive or at-risk.
M03 Part 2 — Offer Mental Health Services (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt)
For all eligible employees:
- (a) Mental health services available at no cost or subsidized, including at minimum:
- Clinical screening and referral to licensed mental health professionals and support resources
- Inpatient treatment (residential programs, hospitalization)
- Outpatient treatment, including telemental health services (in-person therapy, online therapy)
- Prescription medication coverage allowing proper use of prescribed medications
- (b) Organizational commitment to mental health parity in health service coverage.
- (c) Information on benefits coverage and how to access services and community resources is easily and confidentially available (health portal, employee website).
- (d) Confidential benefits consultation available with clearly identified and qualified support staff (benefits counselor, HR representative).
M03 Part 3 — Offer Workplace Support (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt)
Supportive workplace accommodations are clearly described and available for all employees, without a need to disclose the underlying health reason, including:
- (a) Sick leave may be used for mental health needs (e.g., appointments)
- (b) Short- or long-term leave or disability for mental health needs, with the option of a phased return to work
- (c) Increased interpersonal support — manager support with prioritizing and managing workloads, increased frequency of one-on-one check-ins
- (d) Adjustment of work schedule to support mental health needs
- (e) Adjustment of the physical environment to support mental health needs
WELL Core guidance for all parts: direct staff.
[!IMPORTANT] "Mental health parity" is the term to know. It means mental health and substance use benefits are covered on terms no more restrictive than medical and surgical benefits — same visit limits, same cost-sharing, same prior-authorization burden. WELL requires an organizational commitment to parity in both M03 Part 2(b) and M11 Part 2(b).
[!TIP] Part 3's "without a need to disclose the underlying health reason" is the feature's most important clause. Requiring disclosure to access an accommodation is itself a barrier — stigma and fear of career consequence are among the strongest predictors of untreated mental illness in working populations. An accommodation that costs the employee their privacy is not really available.
Feature M04: Mental Health Education — Optimization (2 pt / WELL Core 1 pt)
Intent: promote mental health awareness and education through mental health-focused training or education offerings — for employees and separately for managers.
M04 Part 1 — Offer Mental Health Education (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt)
Trainings — education seminars, workshops or classes — offered at least twice per year to regular occupants:
- (a) Address at least two of three topics:
- Managing personal mental health and well-being — mentally healthy habits, self-care practices, fostering relationships and social connections, managing mental health at work
- Common mental health conditions or concerns, covering at minimum depression, anxiety, substance use, stress, burnout, and loneliness and social isolation
- Signs and symptoms of mental health distress, including how to identify emotional distress and appropriately respond (e.g., Mental Health First Aid)
- (b) Provided in person or virtually, in group or individual settings, through vendors, on-site staff, health insurance plans, community groups or other qualified programs.
M04 Part 2 — Offer Mental Health Education for Managers (1 pt / Core 0.5 pt)
All managers undergo annual mental health training addressing at least three of four topics:
- Identifying and reducing workplace stress-related issues — conducting performance reviews, effective communication skills, personnel management, conflict resolution
- Recognizing common mental health conditions or concerns, covering at minimum depression, anxiety, substance use, stress and burnout, and loneliness and social isolation
- Supporting employee mental well-being using strategies to prevent burnout, low motivation, fatigue, poor work-life balance and other work-related stress
- Recognizing employee mental health concerns or crises, including increasing awareness of workplace and community resources
Delivery options are the same as Part 1(b). WELL Core guidance: direct staff.
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| M04: TWO AUDIENCES, TWO CADENCES, TWO COUNTS |
| |
| PART 1 REGULAR OCCUPANTS at least TWICE PER YEAR |
| at least TWO of THREE topics |
| (self-management / conditions / signs) |
| |
| PART 2 ALL MANAGERS ANNUAL, and it is MANDATORY for all of them |
| at least THREE of FOUR topics |
| (reduce stressors / recognize conditions / |
| support well-being / recognize crises) |
| |
| Managers get a stricter topic count because they CREATE much of the |
| workplace stress environment and are the first to notice distress. |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
[!TIP] "Loneliness and social isolation" appears in both M04 Part 1 topic 2 and Part 2 topic 2, which is notable — WELL treats social connection as a mental health determinant on a par with depression and anxiety, consistent with the evidence linking isolation to cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Expect it in a list-completion question.
[!IMPORTANT] Distinguish M01 from M04. M01's option 2 offers annual trainings as one of five ways to satisfy a precondition. M04 Part 1 requires trainings at least twice per year with specified topic coverage and is an optimization. Same activity, different frequency and specificity — and WELL explicitly permits the overlap to count for both.
Under M01 Part 1(a), how many of the five listed offerings must a project provide, and at what cost?
What must the M03 Part 1 mental health screening tool address at minimum?
A project offers short-term leave for mental health needs but requires employees to submit a diagnosis to HR to access it. Does this satisfy M03 Part 3?
How often must manager mental health training occur under M04 Part 2, and how many topics must it address?
