5.2 Circadian Lighting Design (L03): EML, M-EDI and the Enhanced Daylight Trade

Key Takeaways

  • L03 Circadian Lighting Design is worth 3 points for WELL Certification and 4 for WELL Core, all within a single Part 1.
  • The base thresholds are at least 150 EML (136 M-EDI at D65) for 1 point and at least 240 EML (218 M-EDI) for 3 points.
  • Projects with enhanced daylight may instead achieve 120 EML (109 M-EDI) plus L05 Part 1 or L06 Part 1 for 1 point, or 180 EML (163 M-EDI) plus L05 Part 1 or L06 Part 1 for 3 points.
  • Light levels must be achieved for at least four hours beginning by noon at the latest, at a height of 18 in (45 cm) above the work plane, on the vertical plane at eye level.
  • For dwelling units the levels are achieved in living rooms and kitchens at 55 in (140 cm) in the center of the room, must be dimmable, and if automated must dim automatically after 8:00 pm.

5.2 Circadian Lighting Design (L03): EML, M-EDI and the Enhanced Daylight Trade

Core Exam Takeaway: L03 (3 pt / WELL Core 4 pt) has a single part and a four-cell threshold table. Memorize: 150 EML [136 M-EDI(D65)] → 1 point, 240 EML [218 M-EDI(D65)] → 3 points, with the enhanced-daylight alternatives at 120 EML [109 M-EDI] and 180 EML [163 M-EDI] plus L05 Part 1 or L06 Part 1. Then memorize the three measurement conditions: at least four hours, beginning by noon at the latest, at 18 in (45 cm) above the work plane, on the vertical plane at eye level.

The biology in one page

Human circadian rhythm is entrained primarily by intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) containing the photopigment melanopsin, whose peak spectral sensitivity sits near 480 nm — in the blue region — and which is quite different from the photopic luminous efficiency curve V(λ) that peaks near 555 nm and underlies the ordinary lux. Two consequences follow, and both explain L03's design:

  1. Lux is the wrong unit for circadian effect. Two sources producing identical illuminance can differ substantially in melanopic potency depending on spectral power distribution. Hence EML (Equivalent Melanopic Lux) and the CIE-standardized M-EDI (Melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance), referenced to the D65 daylight illuminant.
  2. The eye, not the desk, is what matters. ipRGC stimulation depends on light arriving at the eye, so L03 measures on the vertical plane at eye level, unlike L02's horizontal task plane.

Downstream, ipRGC signalling reaches the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, which governs the timing of melatonin suppression and release and the cortisol awakening response. Morning light of sufficient melanopic intensity advances and stabilizes that timing; insufficient daytime light and excessive evening light both degrade it — which is why L03 requires light early in the day and, in dwelling units, dimming after 8:00 pm.

Photopic V(lambda): peak ~555 nm --> the basis of LUX (visual brightness)
Melanopsin: peak ~480 nm --> the basis of EML / M-EDI (circadian)

Warm 2700 K source at 500 lux --> LOW melanopic ratio
Cool 6500 K source at 500 lux --> HIGH melanopic ratio

Same lux. Different circadian dose. This is the entire reason
L03 does not simply ask for more lux.

Feature L03: Circadian Lighting Design — Optimization (3 pt / WELL Core 4 pt)

Intent: support circadian and psychological health through indoor daylight exposure and outdoor views.

L03 Part 1 — Meet Lighting for Day-Active People

For all spaces except dwelling units. For workstations used during the daytime, electric lighting is used to achieve:

Base thresholdOR — threshold for projects with enhanced daylightPoints (WELL Core)
At least 150 EML [136 M-EDI(D65)]At least 120 EML [109 M-EDI(D65)] and the project achieves L05 Part 1 or L06 Part 11 (2)
At least 240 EML [218 M-EDI(D65)]At least 180 EML [163 M-EDI(D65)] and the project achieves L05 Part 1 or L06 Part 13 (4)

The measurement conditions — all three matter:

  • (a) Achieved for at least four hours, beginning by noon at the latest, at a height of 18 in (45 cm) above the work-plane, for all workstations in regularly occupied spaces.
  • (b) Achieved on the vertical plane at eye level, to simulate the light entering the occupant's eye.

For dwelling units, in each unit:

  • (a) Electric lighting achieves 150 EML [136 M-EDI] for 1 point, or 240 EML [218 M-EDI] for 3 points; the enhanced-daylight alternatives are 120 EML [109 M-EDI] or 180 EML [163 M-EDI] plus at least 2 points in Feature L05.
  • (b) The light levels are dimmable. If automated lighting is used, it is automatically dimmed after 8:00 pm.
  • (c) Levels are achieved in living rooms and kitchens at a height of 55 in (140 cm) in the centre of the room. If workstations are present, levels are achieved at 18 in (45 cm) above the work-plane.

WELL Core guidance: whole building; projects must have access to at least 10% of leased space for testing. In tenant areas, if a sample furniture layout with workstations is not available, light levels must be achieved in the centre of the room at 140 cm [55 in].

[!IMPORTANT] There is no 2-point tier. L03 jumps from 1 point to 3 points. Exam items that offer "2 points" for an intermediate EML value are testing exactly this.

[!TIP] The enhanced-daylight trade is the feature's cleverest provision. A project with genuinely good daylight — evidenced by earning L05 Part 1 (daylight plan) or L06 Part 1 (daylight simulation) — may meet a 20–25% lower electric-light threshold, because daylight is already contributing melanopic dose. Note the dwelling-unit version raises the bar: it requires at least 2 points in L05, not merely Part 1.

[!WARNING] Two conditions are commonly dropped. First, "beginning by noon at the latest" — a system that reaches 240 EML from 2 pm to 6 pm fails, because circadian entrainment depends on light in the first half of the day. Second, the threshold applies to all workstations in regularly occupied spaces, not to an average across the floor.

EML and M-EDI at a glance

EMLM-EDI(D65)Role in L03
1201091 point, enhanced-daylight path
1501361 point, base path
1801633 points, enhanced-daylight path
2402183 points, base path

The consistent ratio (M-EDI ≈ 0.907 × EML in WELL's table) reflects the conversion between WELL's original melanopic ratio convention and the CIE's D65-referenced standard. You do not need to compute it — but recognizing that M-EDI values are always slightly lower than the paired EML values stops you from mismatching a row under time pressure.

Design levers that raise melanopic ratio without raising lux

Because melanopic ratio is a spectral property, teams have four practical levers, and understanding them makes the thresholds feel less arbitrary:

  1. Higher correlated colour temperature during morning hours (tunable white systems shifting from ~4000 K toward 5000–6500 K).
  2. Increased vertical illuminance — indirect and wall-wash components deliver far more light to the eye per watt than downlights aimed at desks.
  3. Higher surface reflectances, especially walls, which convert ceiling-directed flux into eye-level vertical illuminance.
  4. Daylight admission, which has both a high melanopic ratio and enormous intensity — and which triggers L03's reduced thresholds through L05/L06.

Note how levers 2 and 3 pay off twice: raising vertical illuminance and wall reflectance also helps L07 Visual Balance's luminance-ratio and uniformity criteria.
