AFH 1's reliability heuristic: aim at sources with strong incentives to be accurate. A blog or message-board writer often faces little consequence for getting facts wrong; for-profit copy may mislead. Newspaper articles and scientific papers are normally more reliable because errors damage the author's reputation. A TSgt pasting a viral post into a decision brief without CRAAP is not "staying current."
Analytical Thinking
Informed decisions need more than a fact dump. They need analytical thinking: systematically break information apart, compare different aspects of a problem, and organize information for complex, multidimensional issues. First move: healthy skepticism and several potential causes for what you observe — not the first story that fits the shop narrative.
Limitations of small sample sizes. Judgments from many observations are more likely to be accurate than judgments from a few. AFH 1's university example: friends are happy at University A but your short visit went poorly; friends dislike University B but your visit went well. Gut says pick B. The handbook asks how much of the school, how many classes, how many people you actually saw. Friends had longer, broader contact. Impressions from a few days or a few people usually lose to larger observation sets. A TSgt who changes a shift policy because two Airmen complained last Tuesday is making a small-sample decision.
Correlation does not imply causality. Related factors are not automatically cause and effect. Use a control group and ask whether the groups are otherwise mostly the same. AFH 1's XYZ supplements example: the base offers them free; takers improve fitness scores and non-takers do not. Before crediting the pill, ask whether takers already trained more, ate better (self-selection), differed in age, or had fewer pre-existing conditions. The more similar the groups, the more reasonable a causal claim. The gold standard AFH 1 names for firm scientific inference is double-blind randomized clinical trials. Level IV keeps fallback authority; Level V gives the decision to the group inside constraints. That distinction is the usual trap. Level V is not walk-away leadership.
The two models combine. A leader can run Osborn-Parnes alone at Level I, pull others into Idea Finding only at Level I or II, or have the group apply Osborn-Parnes at Level IV or V. Process choice and participation choice are separate questions — which is the entire point of deciding how to decide.
