WAPS 2026 SSgt Catalog
WAPS PFE is an 80-item, 90-minute multiple-choice exam sourced from AFH-1 / the current Enlisted Promotion Study Guide. Airmen earn one point per correct response (max 80 PFE points), which feeds the broader WAPS promotion score alongside SKT (max 100), EPRs (max 250 under the current system), TIG, TIS, and decorations. There is no candidate fee — the test is duty time. SSgt (E-5) and TSgt (E-6) cycles use separate WAPS 2026 SSgt and TSgt catalogs. The PFE replaces nothing of the SKT specialty exam, which is taken separately when applicable.

WAPS PFE Study Tips from Top Performers
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the WAPS PFE?
The Promotion Fitness Examination (PFE) is an 80-item, 90-minute multiple-choice exam delivered under the Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) by the Air Force Personnel Center. Items are drawn from Air Force Handbook 1 (AFH-1) and the current Enlisted Promotion Study Guide.
Who takes the PFE — SSgt, TSgt, or both?
Active Duty Airmen take the PFE when testing for promotion to Staff Sergeant (E-5) or Technical Sergeant (E-6). Each cycle uses its own WAPS catalog — WAPS 2026 SSgt for E-5 testing and WAPS 2026 TSgt for E-6 testing — but the PFE format is the same 80 items in 90 minutes.
How is the PFE scored within WAPS?
PFE points equal the number of correct responses out of 80, with a maximum of 80 PFE points feeding the WAPS total. WAPS also weights the SKT (max 100), EPRs (max 250 under the current system), Time-in-Grade, Time-in-Service, and decorations. There is no pass/fail cutoff on the PFE itself.
How long is the PFE and how many questions?
The PFE has 80 multiple-choice items with a 90-minute time limit. That works out to roughly one minute per item with time for review.
How much does the PFE cost?
There is no fee. The PFE is administered during duty time at a base Test Control Facility (TCF) or, when authorized, a Pearson VUE Commercial Testing Center.
Is the PFE the same as the SKT?
No. The Specialty Knowledge Test (SKT) covers AFSC-specific career field material and is separate from the PFE. Some AFSCs no longer have an SKT, in which case only the PFE is administered.
What is the official PFE study source?
AFH-1 (Air Force Handbook 1) is the sole source of PFE content, packaged for testing as the current Enlisted Promotion Study Guide. The WAPS 2026 SSgt and TSgt catalogs at studyguides.af.mil list the exact references for each cycle.
Can I retake the PFE if I score low?
There is no in-cycle retake. Airmen who do not promote take the PFE again in the next WAPS cycle for which they remain eligible based on TIG and TIS.
Are PFE items the same for SSgt and TSgt cycles?
Both grades use AFH-1 content, but each cycle has its own catalog and item pool aligned to the responsibilities of E-5 (SSgt) versus E-6 (TSgt). Always study from the catalog that matches your testing grade.
