Tip anatomy

Three molded features control whether the tip protects the plate or abuses it:

  • Well (contact area): the inner depression that receives adhesive and sits on the natural plate.
  • Position stop: the ridge that meets the natural free edge so the well cannot slide toward the eponychium.
  • Sidewalls: the lateral walls. They must line up with the natural grooves. Plastic sitting on living skin is a poor fit and a later lift.

Sizing without damaging the natural plate

Manufacturer numbering commonly runs #1 (widest) through #10 (narrowest). The non-negotiable fit rule is sidewall to sidewall in a relaxed state. The plastic must span groove to groove without being squeezed. An undersized tip flattens the natural C-curve, pinches the bed, and later cracks or pops at the sidewalls. If you are between sizes, take the larger tip and custom-file the plastic lateral edges until it drops in flush. Never file the natural plate narrower to match a small tip — that is how keratin is thinned into a raw, grooved surface.

Prep is deliberately light. Wash and inspect first; if you see infection, inflammation, or a condition Chapter 18 taught you to refuse, you stop. Gently push back the eponychium. Remove only the dead cuticle film that clings to the plate — not living eponychium. De-shine with a fine buffer (about 240 grit) in the direction of growth. Coarse grit on bare keratin strips dorsal layers. Semicircular gouges from a tilted abrasive or e-file bit are rings of fire: painful grooves in living-adjacent plate. Dust off, dehydrate with a manufacturer dehydrator or isopropyl alcohol, and keep massage oil off the plate. Oil is a release agent; adhesive will not hold.

Attachment: stop-and-rock

Ethyl cyanoacrylate is the usual tip adhesive (the same family as wrap resin). Place a small amount in the well — enough to wet the contact area, not a puddle that floods the eponychium. Hold the tip at roughly a 45-degree angle to the free edge, slide until the position stop seats against the natural edge, then rock the well down onto the plate to chase out air. White spots under the plastic are trapped air and a scheduled lift. Hold about 5 to 10 seconds until the bond sets. Adhesive on living skin is a sensitization risk and a bond you soak off; you do not rip skin free.

Trim length with a dedicated tip cutter or clipper made for plastic. Cut the free-edge plastic, not the natural plate. Support the tip while you shape so you do not lever the fresh bond. Shape the extension to the client's requested silhouette (square, squoval, oval, almond) before you commit to a heavy overlay; altering a glued undersized tip after the fact usually means grinding into keratin.

Blending the well without thinning keratin

The seam between plastic and plate must disappear so the overlay sits on a continuous surface. The abrasive may work only on the plastic well. Hold a 180- or 240-grit file flat to that well. Light strokes across the contact edge until the well is flush and the seam is no longer a ridge. The instant grit walks onto bare plate, stop. You are done when the well is thin and the natural plate still has its intact dorsal shine just behind the seam. Liquid plastic-melting "blenders" exist in some kits; if a manufacturer includes one, keep it on plastic and off skin. Blender is not a substitute for correct sizing, and it is not a license to dissolve keratin.

Tips versus forms

Choose a tip when the natural free edge is too short to support a form, when you need speed, or when a consistent barrel matters more than a custom C-curve. Choose a form when you want sculptured length with no plastic seam and a C-curve you pinch and tailor. Either method is length only. Strength comes from the overlay in Section 19.2. A tip without overlay is a chip waiting to happen; a form without structured product is an empty template.

Implements: discard versus disinfect

Enhancement work multiplies porous waste. N.J.A.C. 13:28-3.2(d) is the sentence to memorize: a licensee shall discard after each use all emery boards, orangewood sticks, and all implements and tools that cannot be sanitized. That includes used sanding bands, foam buffers that absorbed product, and files that soaked up monomer or adhesive. Multi-use metal tools — tip cutters, metal pushers, nippers used only on dead cuticle — follow the reusable-manicuring path in 13:28-3.2: enzyme pre-soak, ultrasonic cycle as the rule describes, inspect for rust and pitting, then an EPA-registered tuberculocidal disinfectant for the label contact time, or an FDA-registered autoclave, then air-dry storage in a clean drawer. Pedicure basin contact times and bleach dilutions stay in Chapter 18; applying a toe tip does not rewrite them.

After a tip set, the client still has a natural plate underneath. Redness, pus, or painful separation is not "filled over." You refuse, document, and refer. Cosmetologist-hairstylist scope is cosmetic nail-sculpturing, not medical care of the nail unit.
