Domain 1.B.1.b is the function and structure of the skin. New Jersey adds a bright legal line that a national-only textbook can bury: N.J.A.C. 13:28-2.15 prohibits services that work below the stratum corneum, and it names credo blades, lancets, and skin scrapers among banned implements. Facials, makeup, shaving, and cosmetic hair removal in this state are surface-to-corneum crafts. Know the layers so you can explain why a device or peel built to reach living mitotic skin is medical practice, not cosmetology.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and the outer part of the integumentary system (skin plus hair, nails, and glands). Standard theory lists six functions:

  1. Protection — keratin, sebum, melanin, and the acid mantle.
  2. Sensation — nerve endings for touch, heat, cold, pressure, and pain.
  3. Heat regulation — vessels, sweat, adipose, and arrector pili.
  4. Excretion — sweat carrying water, salts, and wastes.
  5. Secretion — sebum from sebaceous glands.
  6. Absorption — limited; the barrier prefers small, lipid-soluble molecules. Leave medical transdermal claims to physicians.

Those functions are why a facial that strips the barrier leaves the client hot, tight, and reactive, and why a shave nick is an exposure incident rather than a badge of closeness.

Epidermis: five layers, one legal work surface

The epidermis is the outermost, avascular stratified epithelium. It has no blood vessels of its own. It is nourished by diffusion from the dermis. Cells are born deep and die as they rise.

The stratum corneum is packed, flattened, dead keratinocytes glued by lipids. It limits transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and blocks many microbes and irritants. Every legal New Jersey facial — cleanse, mild exfoliation, steam, mask, surface extraction of follicular debris, makeup — is aimed at this layer and at material sitting on it. If a product, blade, or electrical device is designed to cut, pierce, or ablate living epidermis or dermis, it is outside N.J.A.C. 13:28-2.15.

Stratum lucidum is a thin, translucent band most obvious on palms and soles. That extra clear layer is why plantar skin is thicker. It is relevant to pedicure surface callus work. It is not an invitation to graze living skin with a credo blade — those blades are prohibited by name.

Stratum germinativum is one cell thick in simple drawings. Mitosis here replaces the epidermis. Melanocytes insert melanin into surrounding keratinocytes. Melanin is the pigment umbrella over living nuclei. Amount and type (eumelanin versus pheomelanin) drive visible color and ultraviolet protection. You will analyze phototype again in facial consultation. This chapter only needs the structure: pigment is made in the basal layer, not manufactured in the corneum by a mask.

Dermis and subcutaneous tissue

The dermis (true skin) is the living, vascular, fibrous layer beneath the epidermis. Textbooks often teach that it is about 25 times thicker than the epidermis. Two regions matter on the exam:

  • Papillary layer — the outer dermis. Dermal papillae cone up into the epidermis, carrying looped capillaries and tactile (Meissner) corpuscles. This is the epidermal-dermal junction. On the scalp, a dermal papilla at the base of each follicle feeds the hair bulb you studied in the last section. On the fingertips, papillae create friction ridges (fingerprints).
  • Reticular layer — the deeper, thicker dermis, often taught as about 80 percent of dermal thickness. Dense collagen (strength) and elastin (bounce) live here, along with hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sudoriferous glands, arrector pili muscles, blood and lymph vessels, and many nerves. Facial massage moves this tissue. Massage does not let you advertise medical collagen remodeling or disease cure. New Jersey forbids disease-cure claims.

Subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis, adipose) sits below the dermis. Fat cells cushion bone, store energy, insulate, and give contour. It is not a layer you inject, carve, or "dissolve" under a cosmetology license.

Glands, nerves, melanin, and the barrier you must not strip

Sebaceous (oil) glands usually empty into follicles. Sebum mixed with sweat on the surface makes the acid mantle, with a textbook pH around 4.5–5.5. That acidity favors a compact hair cuticle and a competent corneum. Highly alkaline shampoo, over-exfoliation, or endless hot steam can wreck the mantle and leave the face tight, shiny, and reactive.

Sudoriferous (sweat) glands come in two textbook types. Eccrine glands are widely distributed and handle thermoregulation. Apocrine glands concentrate in the axillae and groin and contribute to odor when bacteria metabolize their secretion. You do not treat medical hyperhidrosis in the salon.

Nerve endings make facials and shaving feel the way they do. Light stroking, pressure, and temperature are sensory events in the dermis. Pain is a stop signal, not a deeper result.

Barrier function is the combined work of the corneum's brick-and-lipid mortar, the acid mantle, and melanin over living cells. A New Jersey facial that leaves the client bright pink and raw has not "gone deeper for better results." It has damaged the only layer you are allowed to work on and invited infection — an infection-control failure, not a selling point.

Melanin in the basal layer is protective anatomy. Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation as disorders belong in the next chapter. Here you only need: more melanin generally means more ultraviolet screening of living cells, and the cells that make that pigment are not in the stratum corneum.

  • Facials in the 1,200-hour table (Facials and Massage, Skin Care, Make-up, Depilatory, Eyebrow Arching) stay on the stratum corneum. Steam softens sebum and corneum cells. Exfoliation removes dead corneum. Extraction, if performed, is of follicular contents at the surface, not incision of living dermis. Electrical facial equipment must remain Class I and non-medical.
  • Makeup sits on the corneum. It does not feed the basal layer and it is not a melanin treatment.
  • Shaving cuts terminal hair at the skin surface. A nick that draws blood has reached vessels in living tissue and becomes an exposure incident, not proof you reached a "better" layer.
  • Chemical hair services can inflame the scalp's epidermis if product meets broken skin, which is why you inspect the scalp before color or relaxer.
  • Prohibited under N.J.A.C. 13:28-2.15 and related rules: credo blades, lancets, skin scrapers, skin-tag removal, medical lasers, fish pedicures, and any work below the stratum corneum.

If a manufacturer claims a peel or tool "reaches the dermis" or "removes living skin," that claim is your cue to refuse the method in a New Jersey shop. The scientific name of the layer you may treat is the stratum corneum. The scientific name of the layer that makes new cells and melanin is the stratum germinativum. Do not confuse them on the exam or on a client.
