The nail unit, not just the plate you polish

Domain 1.B.1.c is the function and structure of the nails. New Jersey cosmetologist-hairstylists manicure, pedicure, and apply enhancements. N.J.A.C. 13:28-6.29 assigns 135 hours to manicuring and pedicure. Those hours only pay off if you can name every part of the nail unit and keep blades and abrasives on dead keratin, not living folds.

The technical name for the nail is onyx. Nails are skin appendages made of hard keratin, generally taught as harder — with more cystine/sulfur — than the keratin of hair or of the stratum corneum. That hardness is why a plate can be filed, tipped, and overlaid, and also why over-filing a thin plate is painful: you are grinding toward a living nail bed.

Think of the unit as a small organ, not a chip of plastic. The visible plate is only one piece. Growth, pink color, and infection risk all come from living tissue you must be able to point to.

Specialized ligaments attach the bed and matrix to the underlying bone. You will not palpate them as a separate step. They explain why a crushed fingertip can deform a nail for months after the bruise fades.

The nail bed is pink because of its blood supply showing through a translucent plate. That pink is not polish and it is not melanin of the hair cortex. A bed that is painful, swollen, or separating is a reason to stop — disorders are the next chapter, but anatomy already told you the bed is living.

Cuticle versus eponychium — the distinction the exam expects

Clients say "cuticle" for everything at the base of the nail. NIC-style theory does not.

  • Cuticle is dead tissue adhering to the plate. After a soak or cuticle remover used as directed, a manicurist may loosen and carefully remove dead cuticle from the plate surface.
  • Eponychium is living skin covering the matrix at the proximal nail fold. Cutting it injures living tissue, invites infection, and uncovers the matrix.

If a stem says "living skin at the base of the nail plate covering the matrix," the answer is eponychium, not cuticle. If it says "dead colorless tissue attached to the nail plate," the answer is cuticle.

Hyponychium is the distal seal between free edge and fingertip. It keeps pathogens from invading the nail bed. Aggressive digging under the free edge with a sharp metal tool can break that seal — a classic student error in pedicure. Cleaning under the free edge should be gentle and should stop at dead debris on the underside of the plate, not at living skin.

Perionychium (you may also see paronychium in medical writing) is the living tissue around the nail, especially the lateral folds. This chapter names it as anatomy. Inflammatory infection of that fold is a disorder for the next chapter. Here you only need to know it is living skin you do not cut.

Keratin, water, and how nails grow

The plate's flexibility tracks water content, often taught as about 15–25 percent. Long baths and a soaked pedicure temporarily soften the plate; dehydration makes it brittle. Neither soak permanently reprograms the matrix.

Textbook growth rate: fingernails about 1/10 to 1/8 inch (roughly 2.5–3 mm) per month. Toenails grow more slowly, often described as about one-third to one-half the fingernail rate. A lost fingernail is often taught as taking 4–6 months to replace; a toenail 9–12 months. Growth is usually faster in summer, in younger people, and during pregnancy, and may differ finger to finger (the middle fingernail is often listed as fastest). These are theory ranges, not numbers printed in N.J.A.C. 13:28.

Growth happens in the matrix, not at the free edge. Clipping the free edge does not make the nail "grow faster." A damaged matrix can produce a thin, split, or ridged plate until that tissue recovers — or permanently, if the generative tissue is destroyed. Plate thickness tracks matrix length: a longer matrix generally builds a thicker plate.

Hard keratin of the plate is not the same tissue as the stratum corneum of surrounding skin, but the same New Jersey rule still applies to living folds: you do not work below the corneum of the eponychium or sidewalls, and you do not use a credo blade on the hyponychium or on pedal skin.

  • Enhancements. Tips, acrylic, wraps, and overlays bond to the nail plate. Coarse grit used to "make product stick" can thin the plate down to a painful bed. The plate you destroy will not be fully replaced for months, because replacement speed is a matrix fact, not a filing fact.
  • Infection control later, anatomy now. Living tissue that bleeds is an exposure. Anatomy tells you where living tissue is so you stop before you get there. Disinfection of basins and implements is a later sanitation chapter; it does not replace knowing the hyponychium is a seal.
  • Shaving and facial skin do not change nail anatomy, but the same license-wide rule applies: blades stay on hair shafts and surface corneum, not in living folds.

Disorders such as fungus, ingrown nails, and infection of the perionychium are Chapter 5. If the unit is visibly infected or the matrix area is traumatized, you do not "treat" it with extra cuticle remover. You refuse the service and refer. Healthy anatomy is what you just learned: a dead plate sliding on a living bed, built by a living matrix, framed by living eponychium and perionychium, sealed distally by the hyponychium, and serviced only on keratin the client can afford to file.
