Can You Take the NCMA Exam?

Age
No standalone minimum age is published; current high-school students may qualify through an NCCT-authorized program
Education
A U.S. high school diploma or equivalent is required for the postsecondary, experience, military, and instructor pathways; current high-school pathway candidates may test provisionally
Additional Requirements
  • Current student or graduate within the past 5 years of an NCCT-authorized high-school Medical Assistant program; current high-school students receive provisional certification after passing until required documents are submitted, OR
  • Current student or graduate within the past 5 years of an NCCT-authorized postsecondary Medical Assistant program, OR
  • Practitioner with at least 1 year (2,080 hours) of verifiable full-time MA experience within the past 5 years under a physician or primary care provider, OR
  • Completion of qualifying U.S. military Medical Assistant training within the past 5 years, OR
  • At least 1 year of current verifiable Medical Assistant teaching at an NCCT-authorized organization within the past 5 years AND 1 year of verifiable experience as a Medical Assistant practitioner

Retake Policy

After the 1st failed attempt, wait at least 30 days for attempt 2; after the 2nd, wait at least 30 days for attempt 3; after the 3rd, wait at least 90 days for attempt 4. After the 4th and each later failed attempt, wait at least 180 days, appeal to NCCT's Director of Testing, and provide evidence of remediation before the next attempt.
