Complete LARA-Approved CNA Training
Enroll in and complete a Michigan LARA-approved CNA training program (minimum 75 hours). Programs offered through community colleges, healthcare facilities, and vocational schools.
Personal Care & Basic Nursing SkillsYou are here
Basic Nursing Skills (10 questions) and Personal Care (5 questions) make up 15 of the 65 knowledge questions. Focus on vital signs, body mechanics, transfers, bathing sequences, and proper documentation.
Infection Control, Safety & Emergency Response
Study hand hygiene, PPE, standard precautions, fall prevention, fire safety (RACE/PASS), body mechanics, and emergency procedures. Infection Control and Safety are 7 questions each (14 of 65).
Michigan-Specific Regulations & Resident Rights
Focus on LARA regulations, Michigan Nurse Aide Registry requirements, mandated reporting to Adult Protective Services (1-855-444-3911), OBRA resident rights, HIPAA, and the Michigan Long-Term Care Ombudsman program.
Clinical Skills Practice
Practice all 17 skill tasks in the Michigan handbook. Your test starts with one of 4 mandatory tasks with embedded hand washing, plus 2 or 3 more randomly selected tasks, in 30 minutes. Missing a critical (bold) step fails the task.
Can You Take the Michigan CNA Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must complete LARA-approved training before scheduling exam
- •Must pass BOTH the Knowledge Exam (65 questions, 60 min, 74%) AND the Skill Test (3 or 4 tasks, 30 min)
- •3 attempts to pass the knowledge and skill tests within 24 months of training program completion
- •Must report abuse/neglect to Michigan Adult Protective Services immediately: 1-855-444-3911
- •After passing, Headmaster reports results to LARA for registry listing
- •Must work at least 1 paid hour every 2 years to maintain active status

Retake Policy
You have 3 attempts to pass the knowledge and skill tests within 24 months of completing your training program. If you fail 3 attempts on either portion, you must complete another LARA-approved training program before retesting. The handbook lists $175 for a knowledge or skill test retake.
