Complete Application with Exam
Mail the paper application with the $50 fee and answer the exam questions printed in it (based on the Course of Study). Renewals are filed online with an online exam.
Take Oath Before Dedimus Justice
Within 30 days of appointment, appear before a Dedimus Justice to take oath of office. Return certificate to SOS within 45 days.
Can You Take the Maine Notary Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must be a Maine resident OR a nonresident with a business or place of employment in Maine
- •Must be able to read and write English
- •A notary commission in another state revoked, suspended, conditioned, or not renewed for cause disqualifies an applicant under SOS rules (and is a ground for denial under 4 M.R.S. §1924)
- •No surety bond required
- •Must appear before a Dedimus Justice to take the oath within 30 calendar days of appointment
- •Must return the completed certificate of qualification to the SOS within 45 calendar days of appointment
