Enroll in and complete a Maryland Board of Nursing-approved CNA training program. Programs are offered through community colleges, healthcare facilities, and private schools.

Master basic nursing skills (35%) and ADLs (22%) — together making up 57% of the exam. Focus on infection control, safety, vital signs, body mechanics, transfers, bathing, and grooming.
Role of the Nurse Aide
Study communication techniques, resident rights (OBRA), legal/ethical behavior, HIPAA, abuse reporting, and your role as a healthcare team member. This domain is 26% of the exam.
Psychosocial & Restorative Care
Focus on emotional/mental health needs, cultural sensitivity, and restorative care including assistive devices and promoting independence. These domains total 17% of the exam.
Clinical Skills Practice
Practice all 23 skills from the NNAAP skills list. Know every step — hand hygiene is always included. Simulate the 30-minute skills test. Missing critical steps results in automatic failure.
Can You Take the Maryland CNA Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must complete MBON-approved training before testing
- •Must pass BOTH Written/Oral Knowledge Test (70 questions, 60 scored + 10 pretest, 2 hours, 80% of scored items) AND Clinical Skills Evaluation (5 randomly selected skills, 30 min, all 5 satisfactory)
- •120-day rule: Must pass GNA exam within 120 days of hire for nursing home employment
- •GNA certification required for all nursing assistants working in licensed comprehensive care facilities
- •CNA and GNA certifications expire on the 28th day of birth month (odd/even year based on birth year)
- •Renewal requires $40 fee for 2-year period
