Can You Take the MA Plumber Exam?

Board-approved five-tier plumber educational program totaling 550 hours (110 hours per tier) under 248 CMR 11.00
Experience
No less than 6,800 clock hours as a licensed apprentice under a Massachusetts master plumber, or under a journeyman plumber employed by a master; HVAC/steam/hydronic heat piping hours do not count
Additional Requirements
  • Apply online through DOL eLIPSE (mailed applications are returned)
  • Upload Education Verification Form, Statement of Experience signed by the supervising master, 2x2 photo, and notarized CORI acknowledgement
  • Pay the $31 non-refundable Board application fee
  • After Board approval, schedule the PSI exam ($80 administration fee) at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/maplu
  • Pass both independent parts at 70% or higher, then pay the $52 license fee through eLIPSE

Retake Policy

Each part is scored independently; retake only the failed part. Journeyman candidates have 12 months from application approval and up to six attempts, then must petition the Board in writing. Passing scores are valid for one year only. Master plumber exams have no attempt cap.
