Read the isometric as flue-gas piping: connector rise, common vent, chimney versus Type B, Category IV plastic or AL29-4C, single-wall versus double-wall, and termination distance from windows, grade, and the gas meter. This is not a 248 CMR 10.16 DWV vent quiz. Massachusetts still adds the seven-foot / eight-foot through-wall plate, the three-foot meter rule, and three fasteners on single-wall joints.

If Section 6.1 was product and table method, this section is drawing literacy. PSI will show a stack, a wye, a sidewall pair of pipes, or a chimney chase and ask what is legal. The same sheet may also be an isometric-analysis item. Slow down long enough to see whether the line is a gas vent or a plumbing vent before you size anything.

Appliance vent, not a DWV vent

248 CMR 10.16 sizes plumbing vents from drainage fixture units, trap-arm length, and stack geometry. NFPA 54 Chapter 12 (as modified by 248 CMR 5.12) sizes and locates appliance vents from input, height, category, and listing. A 3-inch pipe through the roof is not “the vent” until you know what it is carrying. Exam tells: a draft hood, flue collar, Type B, chimney flue, PVC/CPVC intake/exhaust, or AL29-4C callout is gas. A closet flange, wet vent, or DFU schedule is plumbing. Do not put a toilet on a Type B. Do not put a furnace on a 10.16 circuit vent.

Chimney versus Type B on a drawing. Masonry is often a double-line chase, clay-tile note, or “existing chimney, 8×8 flue.” Type B is a round double-wall symbol, listed cap, and 1-inch-clearance note. Factory-built chimney is a listed metal chimney, not Type B. If the note says FAN furnace into existing clay flue, apply 248 CMR 5.12(3): atmospheric-to-fan-assisted on a nonconforming existing chimney is out; even a legal reuse still needs chimney area ≤ seven times the smallest connected flue and a history of non-positive, non-condensing operation.

Double-wall versus single-wall. Single-wall connector: same room as the appliance, 6-inch typical clearance to combustibles for listed draft-hood equipment (Table 12.8.4.4 — use the listing if it differs), joints with three corrosion-resistant fasteners each (248 CMR 5.12 12.11.6). Single-wall shall not originate in an unoccupied attic or concealed space and shall not pass through an attic, inside wall, concealed space, or floor (NFPA 54-2012 12.8.3). Through the ceiling, the drawing should change to Type B or a listed chimney section. Type B may run in chases and through stories at listed clearance (often 1 inch). Category IV plastic or AL29-4C uses sealed joints and the manufacturer’s firestop, not three sheet-metal screws.

Category IV plastic on the isometric. Two pipes or a concentric terminal through the wall, slope arrows back to a condensate tee, labels every 10 feet if the pipe is actually combustion-air PVC (12.7.6.1), exhaust material limited to CPVC, polypropylene, or other Board Product-accepted pipe (5.12(2)). Support intervals and UV protection follow the listing. Termination: run the 12.9 method for the window and grade, then apply 3 feet from the gas meter and the GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW plate if the exhaust is under 7 feet above finished grade.

NAT water heater on the right, draft hood, Type B connector rises 2 feet, then 2 feet horizontal into the same wye. Above the wye, Type B common vent goes 18 feet through two floors to a listed cap. Notes: furnace 80,000 BTU/h Category I FAN; water heater 40,000 BTU/h Category I NAT; clearances “Type B 1 in. to combustibles”; single-wall “6 in.”; each single-wall joint shows two screws.

Read it. Furnace connector rise = 1 foot (the vertical before the lateral). Water-heater connector rise = 2 feet. Common-vent height ≈ 18 feet plus the small rise inside the wye if the table note includes it — use the height the item defines. Size connectors from single-appliance tables with those rises; size the stack from FAN+NAT at combined 120,000 BTU/h. The two-screw single-wall joints fail 12.11.6 — Massachusetts wants three corrosion-resistant fasteners unless the joint is listed Type B assembled per the manufacturer. The furnace single-wall must stop before the ceiling; the common vent already shown as Type B is the legal continuation. Do not call this a 10.16 dual vent.

Worked vent isometric 2 — chimney versus FAN replacement

Drawing (described). Existing 8×8 clay-tile chimney, interior area obviously several times a 4-inch furnace collar. Old atmospheric boiler drawn dashed, draft hood, single-wall connector into a thimble. New FAN 90,000 BTU/h Category I furnace drawn solid, 3-inch collar, same thimble, note “reuse chimney, add Type B cap.” A window is 2 feet beside a proposed sidewall power-vent kit that is not used in this option.

Massachusetts answer. 248 CMR 5.12(3)(b) does not let you put the fan-assisted furnace on that existing chimney when you are replacing atmospheric equipment and the chimney does not already meet 12.6.4.2. Even the area test (c) (interior area no greater than seven times the smallest flue) is likely to fail a fat 8×8 versus a 3-inch collar — but you never get to stretch (c) past (b). Legal paths on a practical item: a listed liner sized to the FAN tables, a new Type B system of the correct height, or a listed Category IV conversion if the appliance is actually Category IV (this nameplate was Category I FAN — do not upgrade the vent category in your head). A Type B cap on a clay pot does not erase 5.12(3).

Worked vent isometric 3 — Category IV sidewall, window, grade, meter

Drawing (described). High-efficiency Category IV boiler on an outside wall. Two CPVC lines, labeled exhaust and intake, pitch 1/4 inch per foot back to a condensate trap that drains to an indirect receptor (plumbing, not a gas table). The exhaust terminal is 4 feet above finished grade, 2 feet from an operable window, 2 feet from the gas meter, and 10 feet from an inside corner. No exterior plate is shown. Intake is 3 feet from the same window.

Method, then Massachusetts overlays. Open the 12.9 / Table 12.9.1 logic: this is direct-vent or mechanical-draft (read the appliance), so the window distance is the table row, not a 10.16 roof-vent offset. This lesson will not invent a copyrighted clearance number the item did not print — if PSI prints the table excerpt, use that row. Independently, 12.9.8 already fails the 2-foot meter distance: Massachusetts wants not less than three feet from the gas meter for the exhaust or the intake. 12.9.7 fails the missing plate: 4 feet above grade is less than seven feet, so mount the GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALL OBSTRUCTIONS plate at least eight feet above grade, in line with the exhaust. Snow: if the manufacturer cites a snow line without a method, use ordinance, then NWS ten-year average monthly maximum depth. Material: CPVC is named in 5.12(2); if the drawing had said generic DWV PVC exhaust, that is the product-acceptance trap.

Double-wall versus single-wall on a sidewall job. Category IV does not use Type B. If a distractor shows Type B teed into the CPVC, that joint is fiction. If a distractor shows single-wall galvanized as the condensing exhaust, that metal is the wrong chemistry and the wrong pressure class — AL29-4C / UL 1738 is the metal alternative when plastic is not listed.

Pacing the eight items. Look first at category and material, second at rise versus height, third at Massachusetts meter/sign/fastener/chimney overlays. A candidate who treats every vertical as a plumbing vent stack will miss easy gas points.
