Complete DHS/OLTC-Approved CNA Training
Enroll in and complete an Arkansas DHS/OLTC-approved CNA training program (minimum 90 hours: 74 classroom/lab + 16 clinical). Programs are offered through community colleges, hospitals, and nursing facilities statewide.
Basic Nursing Skills & Personal CareYou are here
Master basic nursing skills (14.7%) and personal care (10.7%) — together making up 25% of the exam. Focus on vital signs, body mechanics, transfers, repositioning, bathing sequences, catheter care, and proper documentation.
Infection Control & Safety
Study hand hygiene (20+ seconds), PPE selection and donning/doffing sequence, standard precautions, isolation categories, fall prevention, fire safety (RACE/PASS), and choking response (Heimlich). These two domains total 22.7% of the exam.
Arkansas-Specific Regulations & Resident Rights
Focus on DHS/OLTC regulations, mandatory reporting under Arkansas Adult Protective Services law, ARNAR requirements, OBRA resident rights, HIPAA, and the Arkansas Long-Term Care Ombudsman program.
Clinical Skills Practice
Practice all clinical skills from the Headmaster skills list. Know every step — handwashing is typically always included. Simulate the 30-minute skills test. Missing any critical step may result in automatic failure for that skill.
Can You Take the Arkansas CNA Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must complete DHS/OLTC-approved training before scheduling the exam
- •Must pass BOTH Written Knowledge Test (75 questions, 60 min, 76%) AND Clinical Skills Test (5 skills, 30 min)
- •Maximum 3 attempts per test section before needing to repeat training
- •Exam fee of $125 may be waived if employed by an Arkansas-licensed nursing facility
- •After passing, Headmaster reports results to ARNAR for registry listing
