1.2 The WAPS Scoring System

The 510-Point Composite

AFI 36-2502, Table 2.4, Calculating Points and Factors for Promotion to SSgt and TSgt, sets four weighted factors:

The PFE is 100 of 510 points — about 19.6 percent of the maximum. It is not "25 percent of WAPS," a figure that circulates widely and does not match the current instruction.

What changed and when. Two revisions produced this table. Time-in-Service and Time-in-Grade were removed as WAPS point factors in 2017, and the Enlisted Performance Report factor was replaced by the Enlisted Performance Brief and Promotion Recommendation Score effective with the 22E6 cycle. If a study aid lists TIS or TIG as point factors, it is describing a system that no longer exists.

What You Actually Control

This is the practical reason to study. On the day you sit down to test:

200 of 510 points — 39.2 percent of the maximum composite — are the two tests. They are the largest block of points still under your control on test day, which is the entire argument for a disciplined study plan.

The Promotion Recommendation Score

AFI 36-2502 assigns points to a maximum of three EPBs using this table:

For members with two or more EPBs in the current grade, add all EPB promotion recommendation values. The instruction's own examples:

• First-time eligible with an MP: PRS = 220
• Second-time eligible with an MP and a P: 220 + 10 = 230
• Third-time eligible with an MP, a P, and a P: 220 + 10 + 5 = 235

Notice the shape of the table: the most current EPB carries nearly all the weight, and prior EPBs add small increments. The 285 maximum is reached only by 250 + 20 + 15 — three consecutive Promote Now recommendations.

On "Not Ready Now": AFH 1 and the instruction note that Airmen who receive an NRN retain promotion eligibility unless the commander submits a promotion non-recommendation letter to AFPC before promotion sequence number increment.

Decorations

Decorations are worth 25 points maximum, with each decoration assigned a point value based on its order of precedence:

The values accumulate but the total is capped at 25. A decoration counts only if its close-out date is on or before the promotion eligibility cutoff date and the "Given Under My Hand" date is before the cycle's public release date.

Worked example. An Airman holds two Air Force Commendation Medals (3 + 3) and four Achievement Medals (1 × 4). That is 6 + 4 = 10 decoration points — well under the cap, and worth exactly as much as eight PFE questions.

The Minimum Scores

This is where the PFE has something closest to a pass/fail line, and AFH 1 and AFI 36-2502 state it identically.

"Airmen that fail to obtain the minimum score will be rendered a promotion non-select." That outcome does not depend on your PRS, your decorations, or the AFSC cutoff — it ends the cycle.

Three worked cases:

1. 42 PFE + 46 SKT = 88 combined. Both components clear 40, but the combined total is below 90. Non-select.
2. 40 PFE + 52 SKT = 92 combined. The PFE sits exactly at the 40 floor, so the SKT must be at least 50 — it is 52. Meets the standard.
3. PFE-only Airman scores 44. Doubled, that is 88 — below both the 45 individual minimum and the 90 combined equivalent. Non-select. A 45 doubles to exactly 90 and meets it.

How Selection Actually Works

Once your composite is computed:

1. AFPC applies the promotion quota to each promotion AFSC
2. An order of merit list is built by total score within each AFSC
3. The highest scores in each AFSC are selected, within quota limitations
4. If more than one individual has the same total score at the cutoff, everyone with that score is promoted

You compete only against Airmen in your own AFSC. A score that selects in one specialty may not select in another, which is why comparing raw composites across career fields tells you nothing useful.

Score notices. AFH 1 restricts them tightly: an Airman's scores cannot be disclosed without written consent, and commander's support staffs, first sergeants, and supervisors are not authorized access. The commander has the duty to notify you of selection or non-selection, and you may retrieve your own notice on vMPF after the initial selection for the cycle.

Doing the Math on Your Own Cycle

A useful exercise before you build a study plan: compute your locked points, then see what the tests must deliver.

Example. A Senior Airman is first-time eligible for SSgt with a Must Promote (220) and 6 decoration points. Locked total: 226. The remaining 200 test points represent 47 percent of everything they will have when the composite is computed. Every 8 questions on the PFE is worth 10 points — more than that Airman's entire decoration total.

That ratio is the reason AFH 1 spends a whole chapter telling Airmen that preparation is an individual responsibility.
