About the AF PFE Exam
The Promotion Fitness Examination (PFE) is one of two knowledge-based tests in the Air Force Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) for promotion to E-5 (Staff Sergeant) and E-6 (Technical Sergeant). The exam has 80 questions — 60 knowledge-based plus 20 situational judgment (SJT) questions added in 2025. After Air Force Handbook 1 (AFH 1) was rescinded in early 2025, knowledge questions are drawn from current Air Force study references rather than AFH 1, covering leadership, heritage, doctrine, customs and courtesies, and enlisted force structure. The PFE score is worth up to 100 points and counts for 25% of the total WAPS composite.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the PFE and how is it scored?
The Promotion Fitness Examination (PFE) is an 80-question test — 60 knowledge-based questions plus 20 situational judgment (SJT) questions. Although it was reduced from 100 to 80 questions, your PFE score is still worth up to 100 points, which counts for 25% of your total Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) score. There is no standalone pass/fail — your PFE score is combined with the Specialty Knowledge Test (SKT), EPR ratings, time in grade, time in service, and decorations to form a WAPS composite.
What topics does the PFE cover?
The 60 knowledge questions cover Air Force heritage and history, military customs and courtesies, leadership and management, Air Force doctrine and core values, enlisted force structure, and national security/DoD organization. The 20 situational judgment questions present workplace scenarios and ask you to identify the most and least effective responses, assessing foundational leadership competencies. No rating-specific or career-field-specific material appears on the PFE.
Is the PFE still based on Air Force Handbook 1 (AFH 1)?
No. AFH 1 was rescinded in early 2025, and the Air Force moved knowledge questions to current study references and added the situational judgment component. Use the official Air Force study guides site and the SJT informational guide for the most current material rather than the old AFH 1.
How often is the PFE administered?
The PFE is administered annually as part of the WAPS promotion cycle for eligible E-4s testing for Staff Sergeant (E-5) and E-5s testing for Technical Sergeant (E-6). Testing windows are set by AFPC and typically occur between February and May, with results released in the summer. Airmen test at their base education and testing center.
Can I retake the PFE if I score low?
No. The PFE is administered once per promotion cycle. If you are not selected for promotion, you can test again in the next annual cycle. There is no immediate retake option. However, because the PFE is only one factor in the WAPS composite, a lower PFE score can be offset by strong SKT performance, EPR ratings, and other factors.
How should I study for the PFE?
Study the current Air Force knowledge references for the six content areas, starting with leadership and heritage, which carry the most knowledge questions. Practice situational-judgment scenarios separately using the official SJT informational guide. Use practice tests to identify weak areas, study in focused 45-60 minute sessions, and use flashcards for dates, rank structures, and core values.
