1.1 Current TR-YÖS Identity, Two-Test Blueprint and Admissions

Key Takeaways

  • TR-YÖS is the ÖSYM examination used by eligible applicants when applying for international admission to Turkish higher education institutions.

  • Numerical Ability and Basic Mathematics each contain 40 questions; their standard scores are weighted at 0.45 and 0.55 respectively.

  • The examination provides 100 minutes for 80 five-option questions, an average of 75 seconds per item.

  • ÖSYM publishes no separate fixed geometry item count or exhaustive subtopic list in the current guide.

  • TR-YÖS results are valid for two years from the examination date; university applications and language requirements are separate.

TR-YÖS in 2026: Understand the Examination Before Planning

TR-YÖS means Türkiye Yurt Dışından Öğrenci Kabul Sınavı, the Exam for Foreign Students for Higher Education in Türkiye. ÖSYM (Ölçme, Seçme ve Yerleştirme Merkezi) administers it under YÖK (Yükseköğretim Kurulu, the Council of Higher Education) rules. Candidates use the result when applying to Turkish higher education institutions. It is an admissions examination for eligible international applicants, including certain Turkish citizens and Blue Card holders; nationality alone does not establish eligibility. Read Section 1.2 before paying an application fee.

The local exam identifier tr-yos and the familiar search term YÖS refer to this preparation route. Older university examinations also used YÖS in their names, so check the full title on every application notice. A university's old YÖS duration or fee is not a rule for the current centralized TR-YÖS. OpenExamPrep provides independent teaching and original practice. Its four-option learning quizzes differ from the official five-option examination.

The Official Two-Test Blueprint

The current ÖSYM guide specifies two tests, each with 40 questions. They share one 100-minute answering period; 100 minutes divided by 80 questions gives an average budget of 75 seconds per question. That average is an arithmetic planning aid, not a separate timer for each question.

Sayısal Yetenek Testi — Numerical Ability400.45
Temel Matematik Testi — Basic Mathematics400.55
Combined examination80One 100-minute period

The 45% and 55% figures are score weights, while each test contains half the items. They do not mean 45 numerical questions and 55 mathematics questions. Mathematics includes geometry in released material, but ÖSYM does not give a separate geometry test weight or promise a 30-mathematics/10-geometry split in the current guide. Do not translate a guessed item split into a claimed 41%/14% blueprint.

The published guide names these two domains without an exhaustive subtopic syllabus. The teaching chapters below organize mathematical skills and reasoning methods independently. Number coding, connectivity, visual attribute rules, figural sequences, fractions, digit arithmetic, radicals, and triangle geometry are illustrated in the public 2026-/1 booklet. The small released sample cannot establish how often any topic appears. Additional material, including Sudoku, gears, logarithms, complex numbers and calculus, is enrichment rather than an officially guaranteed requirement. Prioritize the official released questions and basic methods before spending time on an extension.

Delivery, Languages and Answer Recording

TR-YÖS uses a printed question booklet and answer sheet. The official booklet has five choices per multiple-choice question. Only answers entered correctly on the answer sheet are assessed; work in the booklet helps you solve an item but does not itself earn a mark. A calculator is prohibited, so learn short arithmetic checks and estimation alongside exact methods.

The guide lists Turkish, German, English, French, Russian and Arabic. Its application instructions state that questions are in Turkish with translations in the listed foreign languages and provide a foreign-language choice field. Follow that field's current instructions rather than assuming a language proficiency test forms part of the quantitative examination. A TR-YÖS result does not itself certify the language required by your degree program; check the admitting institution's language and preparatory requirements separately.

For 2026, TR-YÖS/1 was held on 12 April and TR-YÖS/2 on 11 October. Both dates have passed as of this guide's 13 October check. There were two sittings in 2023 as well; there is no basis for describing 2024 as the first twice-yearly year. Check the next official calendar when planning a future sitting. Do not reuse a previous year's registration window or fee.

Scores and What They Can Establish

For each test, the raw score is correct answers minus one quarter of incorrect answers. To have a weighted score calculated, you need at least 0.5 raw points in at least one test. This small scoring threshold is not a university acceptance threshold. A candidate can receive a score yet fail the eligibility or minimum-score requirements of a chosen program.

ÖSYM converts raw scores to standard scores, applies the two weights, and converts weighted scores to a 100–500 scale. The population statistics and conversion for a sitting matter, so adding raw points or multiplying them by five does not reproduce an official score. Section 1.3 explains the calculation and a useful expected-value model for guessing.

Results are valid for two years from the examination date. Validity is not a promise that a university accepts every result throughout that period: check its current application rules, accepted administrations and deadlines. Save the official result document and the exact name of the sitting you took.

University Applications Are a Separate Step

ÖSYM administers the examination; it does not perform centralized university placement, registration, accommodation or scholarship allocation for TR-YÖS. The current guide describes state institutions considering TR-YÖS, secondary-school averages, national examinations and international examination results under senate rules. Foundation institutions may also consider their own foreign-student admission examinations. Read each institution's current policy instead of assuming every university or department ranks applicants in the same way.

A practical application checklist has three columns: the program you want, its published requirements, and the evidence you hold. Record eligibility, accepted score type and minimum, application date, quota, diploma/transcript requirements and language requirements. Mark any unresolved item for clarification with that institution before relying on it. A previous applicant's score cannot establish this year's cutoff, particularly when quota size and applicant competition change.

Use This Guide as a Study Resource

Start with a short arithmetic and reasoning diagnostic. Record the actual cause of each miss: misunderstood instruction, incorrect model, arithmetic error, or insufficient time. Then work through the relevant teaching section and its quizzes. Explain the answer in your own words before moving on. A correct guess does not demonstrate mastery, and a slow correct answer may still identify a pacing problem.

Use a 100-minute mixed session only after learning the methods. Review both raw test scores separately, because strong performance in one can hide weaknesses in the other. The guide's diagrams and worked examples teach techniques; the official booklet remains the source for the examination's actual presentation. This combination keeps your preparation focused without treating editorial chapter titles as an official syllabus.

Source Check and Takeaways

Facts checked on 13 October 2026: ÖSYM 2026-TR-YÖS/2 guide, 2026-/1 released booklet, and YÖK's account of the 2023 introduction.

  • Check eligibility before registration and admission requirements before applying.
  • Distinguish item counts, raw scores and standard-score weights.
  • Use the official two-domain structure without inventing detailed topic quotas.
  • Treat admission and program-language requirements as separate decisions.
