Because the underlying logic is short, well-prepared candidates bank these marks in under twenty seconds each, freeing time for the longer series and coding items later in the paper.
The Three Families You Will See
1. Semantic (word-meaning) analogies
These test meaning relationships between real-world nouns. The relationship can be functional, categorical, causal, or linguistic.
Worked example. Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : ?
- Step 1: Name the link. A doctor works in a hospital — worker : primary workplace.
- Step 2: Apply to the second pair. A teacher works in a school.
- Answer: School.
2. Letter-position analogies
Here each letter is treated as its position number (A=1, B=2, …, Z=26). The rule that transforms the first pair of letters is applied to the second pair.
Worked example. ACE : GIK :: MOQ : ?
- A=1, C=3, E=5. G=7, I=9, K=11. Each letter has moved forward by +6.
- Apply +6 to M=13, O=15, Q=17 → 19, 21, 23 = S, U, W.
- Answer: SUW.
3. Number analogies
A pair of numbers is linked by an arithmetic rule — square, cube, double-plus-one, product of digits, etc.
Worked example. 4 : 16 :: 7 : ?
- 4 → 16 is 4². Apply the square rule to 7: 7² = 49.
- Answer: 49.
Always check whether the rule is unary (acts on one number, like square or cube) or binary (uses both terms). If only one input appears in each side — as above — it is unary.
Relationship Vocabulary to Memorise
Most semantic analogies reuse a small set of relationship types. Recognising the type is half the battle.
4. Degree-of-intensity analogies
These test whether two words sit at the same point on parallel scales — same direction, different intensity.
Worked example. Warm : Hot :: Cool : ?
- Warm is a mild form of hot. Cool is a mild form of cold.
- Answer: Cold.
The trap here is choosing Freezing — it sits on the same scale as cold but at a different intensity, so it does not parallel Warm : Hot. Match the gap between the first pair: a small step up the scale, not a large one.
5. Linguistic analogies (synonym / antonym)
The relationship is purely lexical: the two words share meaning or oppose each other.
Worked example. Brave : Courageous :: Timid : ?
- Brave and courageous are synonyms. The synonym of timid is shy.
- Answer: Shy.
Worked example (antonym). Begin : End :: Create : ?
- Begin and end are antonyms. The antonym of create is destroy.
- Answer: Destroy.
A Second Number Analogy — Cube Rule
Worked example. 2 : 8 :: 3 : ?
- 2 → 8 is 2³. Apply the cube rule to 3: 3³ = 27.
- Answer: 27.
When the first pair uses a unary rule (square, cube, double), the second pair uses the same rule. When the first pair uses a binary rule (e.g., first divided by second), the second pair reproduces that binary relationship.
Worked example (binary rule). 6 : 3 :: 10 : ?
- 6 ÷ 3 = 2. The rule is first number divided by second equals 2. Apply to 10: 10 ÷ 2 = 5.
- Answer: 5.
Common Traps in Number Analogies
Trap — Unary rule vs binary rule. 6 : 3 could be halve (unary: 6/2 = 3) or divide by second (binary: 6/3 = 2). If the second pair is 10 : 5, halve gives 5 and divide by 2 also gives 5 — both fit. When two rules both fit the example, RRB's answer options will exclude one of them; pick the option that is actually listed, and prefer the simpler unary rule if both appear.
Trap — Multiple unary rules fit one example. 4 : 16 could be square (4² = 16) or multiply by 4 (4 × 4 = 16). If the second pair is 5 : ?, square gives 25 and multiply by 4 gives 20. Only one will appear in the options. Prefer square when the first number is small and the result is a perfect square, because RRB favours closed-form rules over ad-hoc multipliers.
A Quick Relationship-Naming Drill
Before sitting the exam, drill yourself on naming the relationship in one phrase for any pair you see. Pen : Ink — tool : consumable. Engine : Car — part : whole. Author : Book — creator : creation. Seed : Plant — early stage : mature form. Once the phrase is automatic, the fourth term writes itself, and the distractors stop looking plausible.
Exam Scenarios and Traps
Trap 1 — Reversed direction. If the stem is Carpenter : Wood :: Tailor : ?, the answer is Cloth (worker:material). A wrong option Needle is plausible because it is a tailor's tool, but it changes the relationship type. Match the type of the first pair, not just any association with the third word.
Trap 2 — Plausible distractor with weaker link. In River : Water :: Volcano : ?, both Lava and Fire are associated with volcanoes. Lava is the correct parallel because, like water in a river, lava is the substance that flows from the volcano — a direct content parallel. Fire is merely associated.
Trap 3 — Letter analogies with mixed shifts. Some items use a different shift per position, e.g., AB : CD :: EF : ? where each pair advances by +2: A→C, B→D, so E→G, F→H, giving GH. Don't assume a uniform shift until you check each letter.
A Six-Second Method
- Read the first pair and silently name the relationship in one phrase (e.g., worker:workplace, square of).
- Hold that phrase in mind and look at the third term.
- Apply the phrase to produce the fourth term before reading the options.
- Only then scan the options — if your predicted answer is there, mark it; if not, re-examine the relationship for a tighter fit.
This pre-emptive method beats scanning options first, because distractors are written to look right under a loosely related rule.
