2. Signs, Signals, Barricades, and Illumination

3. Tools, Ladders, and Scaffolds
Hand and power tools (1926.300–.305). All hand and power tools, whether furnished by the employer or the employee, must be maintained in safe condition. Guards on point-of-operation and rotating parts may never be removed while the tool is in use. Electric power tools must be grounded through a three-conductor cord or be listed double insulated; pneumatic tool hose connections above 40 psi require a safety device at the source of supply to prevent whipping.
Ladders (1926.1053). The most-tested ladder numbers are:

Scaffolds (1926.451). Every scaffold and its components must support its own weight plus at least 4 times the maximum intended load. Platforms must be fully planked, and each platform must be at least 18 inches wide except in specific narrow-work situations. Guardrail systems are required on scaffold platforms more than 10 feet above a lower level, with the top rail between 38 and 45 inches for scaffolds erected under the current rule. 4. Materials, Toxic Substances, and Housekeeping
Handling and storing materials (1926.250). Maximum safe load limits must be posted in storage areas of buildings under construction, and aisles and passageways must be kept clear. The stacking limits are exam favorites:
- Brick may not be stacked more than 7 feet high; a loose brick stack must be tapered back 2 inches in every foot above the 4-foot level.
- Masonry blocks stacked higher than 6 feet must be tapered back one-half block per tier above the 6-foot level.
- Lumber piles may not exceed 20 feet when handled by a forklift, or 16 feet when handled manually, and must be stacked on level, solidly supported sills with nails withdrawn.
Housekeeping and disposal (1926.25). Form and scrap lumber with protruding nails must be kept clear of work areas, passageways, and stairs; combustible scrap and debris must be removed at regular intervals; and containers must be provided for collection of oily or flammable waste.
Toxic materials. 1926.55 controls exposure to gases, vapors, fumes, dusts, and mists, requiring administrative or engineering controls first and PPE only where those are not feasible.
