Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters (GFCIs) are life-safety devices designed to protect human beings from lethal electric shocks caused by current leaking to ground through a person's body. Standard overcurrent protective devices (15A or 20A circuit breakers) protect conductors from overheating and short circuits, but 100 milliamperes (0.1A) is more than enough current to induce fatal ventricular fibrillation in a human heart. NEC 210.8 establishes mandatory GFCI protection across residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies.


1. Operating Principles of Class A GFCI Devices

A Class A GFCI device incorporates a differential current sensing transformer that continuously monitors the current flowing out on the ungrounded (hot) conductor and returning on the grounded (neutral) conductor.

In Oklahoma, read 210.8(F) as the OUBCC adopted it, not as NFPA printed it. OAC 748:20-10-8 modifies this subsection, and the modification changes the answer for the single most common outdoor dwelling load in the state.
