Nebraska CNA License: Complete Roadmap
Follow this path to maximize your chances of passing on the first try
Complete DHHS-Approved CNA Training
Enroll in and complete a Nebraska DHHS-approved CNA training program (minimum 75 hours following OBRA federal requirements). Programs are offered through community colleges, nursing facilities, and vocational schools statewide.
Physical Care Skills (40% of exam)You are here
Master personal care and basic nursing skills including bathing, grooming, dressing, vital signs, body mechanics, transfers, and positioning. This is the largest content area on the Nebraska CNA exam.
Role of the Nurse Aide (40% of exam)
Study communication techniques, resident rights under OBRA, legal and ethical behavior, scope of practice, and mandatory reporting requirements. Understanding your role is critical for exam success.
Psychosocial Care Skills (20% of exam)
Learn about emotional and mental health needs, dementia care, cultural competence, and therapeutic communication for residents with behavioral symptoms.
Clinical Skills Practice
Practice all clinical skills from the Headmaster skills list. Know every step — handwashing is typically always included. Simulate the 30-minute skills test. Missing critical steps may result in automatic failure for that skill.
Can You Take the Nebraska CNA Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must complete DHHS-approved training before scheduling the exam
- •Must pass BOTH Written Knowledge Test (50 questions, 90 min, 70%) AND Clinical Skills Test (5 skills, 30 min)
- •Maximum 3 attempts within 6 months of training before needing to repeat training
- •After passing, Headmaster reports results to Nebraska DHHS for registry listing
- •Renewal every 2 years requires at least 8 hours of paid nursing-related services in Nebraska
- •Must report abuse/neglect/exploitation to appropriate authorities immediately

Retake Policy
