Physical Care Skills & Basic Nursing (~60% of Exam)
Master ADLs (bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, dressing, feeding, elimination, positioning) and basic nursing skills (vital signs, infection control, hand hygiene, C. diff precautions, body mechanics, transfers, fall prevention, fire safety RACE/PASS, pressure ulcer prevention).
Psychosocial Care, Rights & Communication (~20%)
Study dementia/Alzheimer's care (sundowning, validation therapy, elopement), resident rights (OBRA 1987), dignity, HIPAA, SBAR communication, documentation standards, grief stages (Kübler-Ross), and end-of-life/palliative care.
Clinical Skills Practice
Practice the clinical skills you may be tested on — you are assigned 3-4 random tasks (one with embedded handwashing). Common tasks: hand washing, vital signs, bed bath, transfers, ROM exercises, perineal care, ambulation. Perform every key (starred) step correctly and at least 80% of non-key steps on each task.
Can You Take the Massachusetts CNA Exam?
Check if you meet the basic eligibility requirements
- •Must pass both the Knowledge Test (60 questions, 60 min, 76% to pass) AND the Clinical Skills Evaluation (3-4 randomly assigned tasks with embedded handwashing, 30 min) through D&S Diversified Technologies (Headmaster)
- •Maximum 4 attempts at written exam and 3 attempts at skills exam within 24 months of training completion
- •Massachusetts Nurse Aide Registry (MA NAR) maintained by MA DPH at 67 Forest St., Marlborough, MA 01752; phone (617) 753-8144
- •Mandatory reporter under MGL Chapter 19A, Section 15 — must report suspected abuse of elders (age 60+) to EPS hotline at (800) 922-2275
- •LTC facility abuse also reported to MA DPH abuse hotline at (800) 462-5540
- •MOLST (Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) is a physician order used in MA facilities — CNAs must follow MOLST
- •Healthcare Proxy governed by MGL Chapter 201D — designates a substitute decision-maker
- •LTC facilities regulated under 105 CMR 150.000 (MA DPH nursing facility regulations)
- •Renewal: every 2 years, must have worked at least 8 paid hours as CNA, no fee, no CE hours required
- •Reciprocity available for active CNAs with no abuse/neglect findings who have never been certified in Massachusetts before
- •Substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation are noted on the MA NAR and shared through interconnected state nurse aide registries nationwide

Retake Policy
