Miscellaneous Other Special Occupancies (0603)

Why This Section Matters

Subtopic 0603 is the smallest piece of Domain 06 (1% of the E2 exam), but it covers a wide range of occupancies - places of assembly, theaters, carnivals, agricultural buildings, and RV parks. The exam tests whether you can identify which Article applies and recall the headline rules for each. The common themes are (1) shock protection (GFCI and AFCI on more circuits than in dwelling units), (2) mechanical protection of temporary or portable wiring, and (3) egress and life safety in occupancies with large crowds.

Article 518 - Places of Assembly

Article 518 applies to buildings or portions of buildings used for the gathering of 100 or more persons. Examples: auditoriums, gymnasiums, restaurants, dance halls, bowling alleys, churches, exhibition halls, lecture halls, and skating rinks.

Key rules:

• Wiring methods (518.4): the fixed wiring method must be metal raceways, flexible metal raceways, nonmetallic raceways encased in not less than 2 in. of concrete, or Type MI, MC, or AC cable containing an insulated equipment grounding conductor. Nonmetallic-sheathed cable and similar residential methods are not permitted in the assembly area. Relaxations exist for portions of the building not required to be of fire-rated construction and for club rooms and similar spaces.
• Scope test (518.2): Article 518 applies to a building or portion designed or intended for the assembly of 100 or more persons. It does not apply to assembly occupancies that fall under Article 520 (theatrical), 525 (carnivals), or 540 (motion picture projection rooms).
• GFCI: receptacles in assembly occupancies are governed by the ordinary non-dwelling list in 210.8(B) — Article 518 does not add its own blanket GFCI rule.
• Egress lighting: the requirement for illuminated means of egress comes from the building and life safety codes; the NEC's role is Article 700 where that egress lighting is on an emergency system.

Article 520 - Theaters and Similar Locations

Article 520 governs theaters, audience areas, motion picture studios, and similar occupancies. The hazards are combustible sets, hot lights, dimmers, and concentrated audiences.

Key rules:

• Wiring methods (520.5): the same metal-raceway/metal-sheathed-cable family required in Article 518 applies to fixed wiring in theaters, with additional allowances for portable equipment.
• Fixed stage switchboards (520.21 and following): must be dead-front, and the associated dimmer and control equipment must be arranged so that only qualified persons have access to live parts.
• Portable stage equipment: portable stage cables, feeders, and cords must be listed extra-hard usage, protected from physical damage, and — for portable feeders — provided with strain relief and grounded metal parts.
• Border lights, footlights, and stage luminaires: must be constructed and installed for the temperature and the physical abuse of a stage, and the metal parts must be grounded.
• Dressing rooms (520.71 and following): pendant lampholders are prohibited, luminaires near mirrors and above dressing tables need guards, and the switching of those luminaires and receptacles is specified.

Article 525 - Carnivals, Circuses, Fairs, and Similar Events

Article 525 covers temporary outdoor installations - amusement rides, food booths, tents, and similar temporary structures. The hazards are weather, crowd traffic, and exposed temporary wiring.

Key rules:

• GFCI (525.23): GFCI protection is required for 15 A and 20 A, 125 V receptacles that are used by personnel or supply equipment readily accessible to the general public, and for equipment used to power lighting or attractions. Receptacles supplying rides, concessions, and similar equipment that are not accessible to the general public, and receptacles supplying an appliance in a locked enclosure, are treated differently — read the stem for who can reach the receptacle.
• Overhead conductor clearances (525.5): amusement rides and attractions must not be located under or within 15 ft horizontally of conductors operating at over 600 volts; 525.5(B) sets clearances for conductors 600 volts or less.
• Disconnecting means (525.21): each ride and concession must have a fused disconnect or circuit breaker within sight of and within 6 ft of the operator's station, and it must be readily accessible to the operator, including a shunt trip where the disconnect is not within sight.
• Wiring methods (525.20): portable cord must be listed extra-hard usage, protected where it crosses walkways or is subject to vehicle traffic, and not laid on the ground where the public walks unless protected.

Article 547 - Agricultural Buildings

Article 547 covers buildings used for agricultural purposes - confinement of livestock, dairy operations, poultry houses, and similar. The hazards are corrosive waste, dust, wetness, and animals' sensitivity to stray voltage.

Key rules:

• Equipotential planes: in animal confinement areas with concrete floors where metallic equipment accessible to animals is present, an equipotential plane — a bonded grid of reinforcing steel or wire mesh embedded in or under the concrete — must be installed and bonded to the electrical grounding system with a solid copper conductor not smaller than 8 AWG. Livestock are far more sensitive to small potential differences than people are, and a few volts between a wet floor and a metal waterer will stop a dairy herd from drinking.
• GFCI: receptacles in agricultural buildings are GFCI-protected under the locations listed in Article 547 and in 210.8(B); the dirt, moisture, and washdown make this a standing requirement rather than an exception.
• Site-isolating device: where a distribution point supplies more than one building or structure, Article 547 requires a site-isolating device at the distribution point to open all ungrounded conductors, so the entire farmstead can be de-energized from one location.
• Wiring and corrosion: in areas with excessive dust from feed and bedding, or corrosive vapors from manure pits, the wiring method and enclosures must be suitable for the environment, and 547 restricts the use of standard boxes and fittings in those areas.

Article 552 - RV Parks and Park Trailers

Get the article numbers straight, because the exam uses them as distractors: Article 551 covers recreational vehicles and recreational vehicle parks, including the site supply equipment at each RV site. Article 552 is a separate article covering park trailers. Article 550 covers mobile homes and mobile home parks.

Key rules for RV sites (Article 551 Part VI):

• Site supply equipment: each RV site with electrical supply must be equipped with listed RV site supply equipment, located on the left (road) side of the parked RV, 5 to 7 ft above grade, and not less than 2 ft or more than 6.5 ft from the left edge of the stand.
• Receptacle ratings: the site supply equipment provides listed configurations — a 50 A, 125/250 V receptacle; a 30 A, 125 V (TT-30R) receptacle; and a 20 A, 125 V receptacle — with the required mix depending on the percentage of sites served.
• GFCI: 125-volt, single-phase, 15 A and 20 A receptacles in RV site supply equipment require GFCI protection.
• Grounded conductor: the grounded (neutral) conductor is bonded to ground only at the service, never at the site pedestal; RV site distribution downstream of the service is a 4-wire system with the neutral isolated from the equipment grounding conductor.
