Why Hazardous Locations Matter on the E2 Exam

The ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector (E2) exam covers hazardous locations as the largest single piece of Domain 06 (Special Occupancies). Domain 06 is 9% of the exam, and subtopic 0601 (hazardous locations) is 3% - fully one-third of the special-occupancy domain. You must be able to look at a proposed installation in a paint spray booth, grain elevator, fuel dispensing area, or textile mill and decide whether the classification, the wiring method, the equipment marking, and the sealing are correct.

NEC Chapter 5 (Special Occupancies) begins at Article 500. Articles 500 through 506 establish the classification framework for locations where combustible gases, vapors, dusts, or fibers may be present. The framework has two parallel systems - the traditional Class/Division system (Articles 500-503) and the newer Zone system (Article 505 for Class I, Article 506 for Class II). The Zone system is permissive, not mandatory: an installation can use either system, but the two systems must not be mixed within the same location.

Division vs Zone System

The Class/Division system uses two divisions:

  • Division 1 - the hazardous material is present normally during normal operations, in concentrations high enough to be ignitible. This is a continuous, intermittent, or frequent presence.
  • Division 2 - the hazardous material is present only abnormally, such as only during equipment failure, spill, or accidental rupture. It is not normally present in ignitible concentrations.

The Zone system (Article 505 Class I, Article 506 Class II) adds a third tier of granularity:

The Zone system recognizes that Division 1 actually spans a wide range - from continuous to only occasional. Zones give the designer a more precise classification, often permitting more cost-effective equipment selection in the lower-hazard end of Division 1.

Equipment Suitability and Marking (NEC 500.8)

Equipment in hazardous locations must be approved for the class, division (or zone), group, and temperature code of the location. Section 500.8(B) requires equipment to be marked with the class, the group (Class I Groups A-D, Class II Groups E-G, Class III has no groups), the temperature code, and the division or zone. Some Division 2 equipment may be marked only for Class I, Division 2 - and that equipment must never be installed in a stricter Division 1 location. For Zone-marked equipment, the marking shows "Class I, Zone 1, AEx" or similar.

Temperature Codes (T-Codes)

The temperature code (T-code) is the maximum surface temperature of the equipment under rated conditions. NEC Table 500.8(C)(1)(1) lists the T-codes:

The T-code of the equipment must be below the autoignition temperature of the specific gas, vapor, or dust present. T6 (85 C max) is the coolest and is safe in any location; T1 (450 C max) is the hottest and is only safe where the autoignition temperature exceeds 450 C. The inspector must verify that the equipment T-code temperature is less than the autoignition temperature of the hazardous material.

Threaded RMC in Class I must be threaded with an approved conduit threading die and engage at least five full threads when entering explosionproof enclosures.

Sealing (NEC 501.15, 502.15)

Conduit seals in Class I locations prevent the passage of gases and vapors through the raceway from one classified area to another, or from a classified area to an unclassified area. Section 501.15 requires seals within 18 inches of the enclosure boundary. Sealing fittings must be listed for the purpose. For Class I, Division 1, a seal is required at each conduit run entering or leaving a classified area boundary.

Boundary seals: where a Class I raceway crosses from a Division 1 to a Division 2 or unclassified area, a seal is required at the boundary. The raceway between the seal and the enclosure in the classified area must be of the type permitted for the stricter division. Class II sealing follows the parallel requirements of 502.15, with additional attention to dust accumulation.

Intrinsically Safe Systems (Article 504)

Intrinsically safe (IS) systems operate on the principle that the electrical energy available is too low to ignite the hazardous atmosphere under normal or fault conditions. Article 504 covers intrinsically safe system installation; the IS wiring must be separated from non-IS wiring to prevent energy transfer. IS equipment is often used in instrumentation and control in Division 1 or Zone 0/1 locations where explosionproof enclosures are impractical. Section 501.10(B) also recognizes IS as a permitted wiring method in Class I, Division 2.
