Three Delivery Options

The E2 exam is computer-based, and ICC's credentialing pages list three administration options — PRONTO, PRONTO@work, and Pearson VUE. All three present the identical 80-question, 3.5-hour exam:

Choose Pearson VUE if you prefer a distraction-free testing center and do not mind traveling to a site. Choose a PRONTO option if you need scheduling flexibility, but make sure your workspace is clear, well-lit, and free of any materials beyond your tabbed NEC.

Pearson VUE Center: What to Expect

At a Pearson VUE center you will check in at a front desk, have your photo taken, and store all personal items — phone, wallet, keys, bag, jacket pockets — in a locker outside the testing room. You may bring your tabbed NEC into the room, and the center typically provides a scratchpad or laminated note board for arithmetic (check with your specific site). A center proctor monitors the room via camera and in-person walkthroughs. You may step out for a break, but the exam clock does not pause — any break time comes out of your 210 minutes.

ICC PRONTO Remote: What to Expect

With PRONTO, a live proctor monitors you through your webcam. Before launch you perform a room scan with the camera to show the proctor that your desk and surrounding area are clear. Run the system/equipment check that ICC provides well before test day rather than on the appointment itself, confirm the current camera and workspace rules in your myICC confirmation e-mail, and set up where your internet connection is stable, the room is quiet, and no other person will enter the frame. Treat a remote sitting as if leaving the camera frame ends the exam.

Open-Book Rules: What Is and Isn't Allowed

The E2 is open-book on the NEC — this is the single most important logistical fact. Permitted and prohibited items:

The key distinction: you may tab and highlight, but you may not bring a second book or loose written content. Only the reference(s) listed for E2 in the ICC Exam Catalog may be used, and that list is NFPA 70 alone — so the NEC Handbook, which is a separate publication carrying commentary and illustrations, is not on the list. Handwritten annotation policy varies by administration channel and has tightened over time; read the admission rules in your myICC confirmation and, if in doubt, confirm with ICC Credentialing before test day rather than arriving with a book that gets rejected at check-in.

Step-by-Step: Purchase to Scheduling

Reschedule and Cancellation Windows

ICC states you have one year to schedule or reschedule a purchased exam, so a change of plans inside that year does not by itself cost you the fee. What does cost you is a late cancellation or a no-show against a booked appointment: rescheduling deadlines are set by the delivery channel and are short (commonly measured in hours before the appointment, not days). ICC also treats exam fees as non-refundable once the exam is purchased. Read the exact cancellation deadline shown in your myICC confirmation when you book, and move the appointment early rather than gambling on the window.

Identification: What Counts

On test day you must present one valid, government-issued photo ID with a signature. Acceptable forms include:

• Driver's license or state-issued ID card (US or international, if current)
• Passport (US or foreign, if current)
• Military ID (if it carries both a photo and a signature)

ICC's own instruction is that you enter your first and last legal name exactly as it appears on your government-issued photo identification, and that the ID be ready to show the proctor. If you recently changed your name (for example, marriage), update your myICC profile before scheduling so the names align — a mismatch at check-in can cost you the appointment. Expired IDs are not accepted.

Accommodations

ICC provides testing accommodations for candidates with documented disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Common accommodations include extended time, a reader or scribe, and an accessible testing room. Request accommodations through ICC Credentialing with supporting documentation before scheduling your exam — the review takes time, so file early. Some accommodations (such as extended time) can be applied to a remote session; others may require a test center. Retake Policy

Each attempt requires a new exam fee, and exam fees are non-refundable. ICC does not publish a fixed E2-specific waiting period, so confirm any retake interval in your myICC result notice before you rebook. After a failed attempt you receive a diagnostic report by content area — use it to re-target your weakest domains before scheduling again. ICC's guidance is to study the weak areas identified in the report rather than immediately re-testing; a failed attempt is a sunk cost, so invest in targeted review before paying again.
