Understand Iowa's Unique No-Prerequisite Rule

Iowa is the only state that allows candidates to test before completing CNA training. You may register with Headmaster/TMU Iowa immediately. Most community college programs and employers recommend completing the 75-hour training (45 didactic + 30 clinical per Iowa Admin. Code 441 Ch. 81) before testing for best results.

Additional Requirements
  • Iowa is the ONLY state that does NOT require CNA training completion before taking the competency exam
  • Must pass both the Written Examination (70 questions, 60 min, 70%) AND the Clinical Skills Evaluation
  • The Iowa Direct Care Worker (DCW) Registry — not a traditional 'CNA Registry' — is maintained by Iowa DIAL under Iowa Admin. Code 441 Ch. 81
  • DCW Registry renewal: must complete at least 8 hours of qualifying work per 24-month cycle
  • 12 hours of annual in-service training required; must be employer-paid if working in state-licensed LTC facility (Iowa Code Ch. 135C)
  • Mandatory reporting: Iowa Code Ch. 235B requires CNAs to report suspected abuse/neglect to supervisor and Iowa DHHS Adult Protective Services
  • Iowa Long-Term Care Ombudsman (LTCOP) operates under Iowa DHHS — contact for resident rights issues
  • Iowa Code Ch. 135C governs long-term care facilities; Iowa Code Ch. 144A governs advance directives
  • Reciprocity available for CNAs with active unencumbered listing in another state — apply through Iowa DIAL
  • As of January 2026, written exam registration and payment is through Headmaster/TMU Iowa platform; community colleges are proctor sites only
