Close reading of nonfiction passages including workplace documents, science articles, social studies texts, and historical documents. Skills: identifying main ideas, explicit details, inferences, text structure, author's purpose, vocabulary in context, and argument analysis.
Analysis of fiction, poetry, drama, and memoir. Skills: identifying theme, character motivation, figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification), literary devices, mood, and tone.
Grammar, usage, mechanics, and sentence structure. Skills: subject-verb agreement, pronoun case and agreement, verb tense, comma and punctuation usage, sentence combining, parallel structure, modifier placement, commonly confused words, and eliminating run-ons and comma splices.
45-minute essay in which test-takers analyze two passages presenting opposing views on an issue, identify the stronger argument, and write an evidence-based response. Scored on argument development, evidence use, and language skills (not tested in this MCQ bank).
Evaluating claims, distinguishing fact from opinion, identifying supporting evidence, and analyzing how authors build arguments in informational texts.
Determining the meaning of words and phrases as used in context, including academic vocabulary, domain-specific terms, and figurative language.
