1.1 DELE A2 Identity, Purpose & Nationality Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • The Instituto Cervantes issues the DELE A2 in the name of Spain's Ministry of Education; the Universidad de Salamanca helps write and grade exam forms.

  • A DELE diploma has indefinite validity and never needs renewing.

  • Ley 19/2015 requires most applicants for nationality by residence to pass DELE A2 or higher plus the CCSE; nationals of origin of Spanish-speaking countries take only the CCSE.

  • The official 2026 fee for DELE A2 is €138 in Spain and US$130 in the United States; the remaining 2026 A2 dates are 17 October and 13 November.

Quick Summary: The DELE A2 (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera, nivel A2) is an official diploma that certifies elementary Spanish at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The Instituto Cervantes issues it on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education, and it has indefinite validity. It is also the language test named in Spanish nationality law: most applicants for nationality by residence must pass DELE A2 or higher and the CCSE civics test.

Who Issues the DELE and Who Writes It

The DELE system was created in 1988 and is regulated today by Real Decreto 1137/2002 and Real Decreto 264/2008. Three institutions are involved, and the exam guide published by the Instituto Cervantes describes their roles precisely:

InstitutionOfficial role
Ministerio de Educación (Spain)Holder of the diplomas; the DELE is an official Spanish state qualification
Instituto CervantesIssues the diplomas in the Ministry's name and runs the academic, administrative and financial side of the system
Universidad de SalamancaCollaborates with the Instituto Cervantes in writing the exam forms and in grading

The DELE family has six general levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) plus school versions for learners aged 11 to 17 (A1 escolar, A2/B1 escolar and B2/C1 escolar). The school versions carry the same validity as the general diplomas. You do not need a lower diploma before registering for A2, and since November 2015 anyone can register regardless of nationality.

Two facts about validity are worth memorizing because they appear in exam FAQs and nationality paperwork:

  • The diploma has vigencia indefinida: once you are awarded Apto (pass), it never expires.
  • Older DELE diplomas issued under previous names (before the 2008 update) are still valid, so a holder does not need to re-sit the exam for nationality purposes.

What "A2" Means in Practice

The Instituto Cervantes describes the A2 diploma as proof that the holder can:

  1. Understand and use frequent everyday expressions about areas of immediate relevance: basic personal and family information, shopping, places of interest and occupations.
  2. Carry out simple, direct exchanges about familiar or habitual matters.
  3. Describe in simple terms aspects of their past and their surroundings.
  4. Deal with immediate needs in everyday situations.

In Spanish CEFR terminology, A2 is the Plataforma level (English: Waystage); A1 is Acceso. At A2 you are still a basic user. You are expected to handle routine transactions, short personal texts and simple past narratives. You are not expected to argue abstract opinions.

Where the exam content comes from

The exam guide states that the language that may appear on DELE A2 is drawn from the Niveles de referencia para el español (the Plan Curricular of the Instituto Cervantes). That inventory has three components:

  • Grammatical component: grammar, pronunciation and prosody, spelling.
  • Pragmatic-discourse component: communicative functions, pragmatic strategies, text genres.
  • Notional component: general notions (time, space, quantity) and specific notions (topics such as housing, food, health, work and travel).

Chapters 6–11 of this guide follow that inventory: the grammar systems first, then the everyday topic vocabulary.

Which Spanish counts?

The norma lingüística rule is useful and often misunderstood. The exam's instructions, reading texts and recordings use contemporary peninsular (European) Spanish. In the texts you produce, any Hispanic norm is valid if you use it consistently and it is backed by large groups of educated speakers. A Mexican or Argentine learner can therefore write ustedes for "you all" or use tomar el autobús, as long as they don't mix systems randomly.

DELE A2 and Spanish Nationality

For most candidates in Spain, the main reason to sit DELE A2 is nacionalidad española por residencia. Ley 19/2015, de 13 de julio (final provision seven) says that integration into Spanish society is proved by passing two tests designed and administered by the Instituto Cervantes:

  1. Language: basic knowledge of Spanish at A2 or higher, proved by passing a DELE A2 or higher.
  2. Civics: knowledge of the Spanish Constitution and of Spain's social and cultural reality, proved by the CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España).

The detailed procedure is set out in Real Decreto 1004/2015. When you register in Spain for DELE A2 for nationality purposes, you must register with your NIE (foreigner identity number).

Who does not have to take DELE A2 for nationality

The Instituto Cervantes' FAQ lists these cases:

SituationWhat happens
National of origin of a country or territory where Spanish is official (not acquired nationality)Exempt from DELE A2; still takes the CCSE
Under 18, or legal capacity modified by a courtExempt from the tests
Already holds DELE A2 or higher, or an Escuela Oficial de Idiomas certificate at A2, B1 or B2Exempt
Completed ESO (compulsory secondary education) in SpainMay be dispensed if they prove it and the Ministry of Justice agrees
Cannot read or writePartial dispensation: sits the adapted DELE A2-NA with a Ministry of Justice authorization
Deaf person who officially proves the conditionDoes not need to take DELE A2

To add the diploma to a nationality file, the applicant can either authorize the Ministry of Justice to consult the result with the Instituto Cervantes or provide a copy of the diploma. The electronic grade certificate carries a secure verification code, so a printed copy can be checked.

Candidates often confuse the three Instituto Cervantes exams. The official comparison published by the Instituto Cervantes gives these differences:
