9.3 Oral Tarea 3: Conversation with the Interviewer (and Your Two Questions)
Key Takeaways
Tarea 3 is a 3–4 minute conversation about the candidate's Tarea 2 topic, based on the interviewer's script of questions.
After answering, the candidate must ask the interviewer two questions about the same topic.
Modelo 0 questions repeat what the candidate said and ask about frequency, place, company, preference or reasons, for example '¿Con quién va?'.
Tarea 3 is worth 45% of the rater's marks; band 2 requires understandable answers and the questions about the chosen topic.
Answers grow toward band 3 with a direct answer plus a reason with 'porque' and a concrete detail.
9.3 Oral Tarea 3: Conversation with the Interviewer (and Your Two Questions)
Tarea 3: Conversación con el entrevistador lasts 3 to 4 minutes and closes the oral test. It links directly to your Tarea 2 talk: the interviewer has a script of questions (guion de preguntas) and chooses questions about the options you talked about. The number and order of questions depend on the time and on how the conversation goes. When you have answered, you must ask the interviewer two questions about the same topic.
| Feature | Tarea 3 (Modelo 0) |
|---|---|
| Time | 3–4 minutes |
| Topic | The topic of your Tarea 2 talk |
| Interviewer | Asks questions from a script and helps the conversation along |
| Your part | Answer the questions, then ask the interviewer two questions about the topic |
| Weight | 45% of the rater's marks, the largest share of any task |
Is Tarea 3 Prepared?
The Modelo 0 describes Tarea 3 as a task the candidate does not prepare, with no support material. The exam guide, however, describes the two questions as previously prepared. In practice the advice is the same: because Tarea 3 follows your Tarea 2 topic and the Tarea 2 lámina announces the two questions, use part of your 10 minutes to think of two simple questions about that topic. The answers to the interviewer's questions are spontaneous.
What the Interviewer Asks (Modelo 0 Examples)
Notice the pattern: the interviewer repeats something you said (Entonces...) and asks about frequency, place, company, preference or a reason, using usted. These are present-tense questions about your habits, so prepare to answer with the present tense, frequency expressions and porque.
How the Rater Scores Tarea 3
The rater uses a separate scale for this interactive task:
- Task fulfilment, band 3: adds some detail, comment, opinion or reason to the information the interviewer asks for, and asks the questions about the chosen topic.
- Task fulfilment, band 2: answers the interviewer's questions with the required information in an understandable way, gets the messages across and asks the questions about the chosen topic.
- Task fulfilment, band 1: answers only some questions, briefly or partially, and cannot manage the short conversation or ask clear questions.
- Use of language, band 2: exchanges very limited personal information and manages the situation, though help from the interviewer may be needed; words and short phrases, with errors or pauses.
- Use of language, band 3: a simple repertoire that works with some efficiency, with control of the basic rules for simple sentences despite some errors or pauses.
The exam guide's samples come from material in which the questions point was not included, so the raters did not consider it. In the current Modelo 0 the two questions are part of the task, so do not skip them.
Answer + Reason + Detail: Avoiding One-Word Answers
One-word answers ("Sí", "No", "Bien") give the rater little to score and make the interviewer drag information out of you. The band-3 description rewards adding a detail, comment, opinion or reason, so train yourself to answer in three steps:
The Rule of Three Sentences
Sentence 1: Direct Answer ───► "Sí, me gusta mucho cocinar en casa."
Sentence 2: Reason (Porque) ───► "Porque es más sano y relajante después del trabajo."
Sentence 3: Specific Detail ───► "Mi plato favorito para cocinar es el arroz con verduras."
Contrastive Analysis: Failing vs. Passing A1 Responses
| Examiner Prompt | Failing / Monosyllabic Answer | Optimal A1 Expanded Response |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Le gusta viajar en tren o prefiere el autobús? | El tren. (Too short: no reason, no detail, almost no grammar to rate). | Prefiero viajar en tren porque es más rápido y cómodo. En el tren puedo leer libros o escuchar música tranquilamente. |
| ¿Hace deporte los fines de semana? | Sí, juego al fútbol. (Marginal: answers fact, but misses opportunity to showcase vocabulary). | Sí, practico deporte casi todos los fines de semana. Normalmente juego al fútbol con mis amigos de la universidad los sábados por la mañana. |
| ¿Tiene alguna cafetería favorita cerca de su casa? | No. (Communicative failure: stops conversation dead). | No tengo una favorita, pero voy a una cafetería pequeña cerca de mi casa porque hacen un café con leche excelente y tostadas ricas. |
Cooperative Turn-Taking & Active Listening Cues
The A1 descriptors assume a cooperative interlocutor, and short signals that you are following the conversation make the exchange smoother:
Verbal Active-Listening Markers
Incorporate natural conversational confirmations when the interviewer speaks or introduces a transition:
- ¡Claro! (Of course!)
- Entiendo perfectamente. (I understand completely.)
- Comprendo. (I understand.)
- Exacto. (Exactly.)
- ¡Qué interesante! (How interesting!)
Micro-Fillers for Thinking Time
If an unexpected question catches you off guard, never sit in petrified silence. Fill the cognitive pause with polite Spanish discourse markers:
- Bueno... a ver... (Well... let's see...)
- Es una buena pregunta... (That is a good question...)
- Pues, la verdad es que... (Well, the truth is that...)
Asking Your Two Questions
Your questions must be about the same topic as the conversation. Match the interviewer's register by using usted (third-person verb forms), and keep them short:
| Topic | Question 1 | Question 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Trabajo | ¿Dónde trabaja usted? | ¿Trabaja también los sábados? |
| Transportes | ¿Cómo va usted al trabajo? | ¿Usa el metro todos los días? |
| Deportes | ¿Qué deporte hace usted? | ¿Le gusta el fútbol? |
| Tiempo libre | ¿Qué hace usted los fines de semana? | ¿Va mucho al cine? |
| Comidas | ¿Dónde come usted normalmente? | ¿Le gusta la comida española? |
Check the form: opening ¿, a question word with its accent (dónde, qué, cómo), and a verb that matches usted (trabaja, va, le gusta). Listen to the answer and react briefly (¡Qué bien!, Yo también.) before your second question.
Annotated Tarea 3 Transcript (Topic: Mi semana)
Entrevistador: Muy bien.
Candidato: Vale. ¿Usted hace deporte? ¿Qué deporte le gusta?
Entrevistador: Sí, corro todas las mañanas. Me gusta mucho correr.
Candidato: ¡Qué bien! ¿Y qué hace usted los fines de semana?
Entrevistador: Normalmente voy al campo con mi familia. Pues hemos terminado. Muchas gracias.
Candidato: Gracias a usted. Adiós.
Commentary: every answer gives the information asked for plus a detail (who with, where, when), which matches the band-3 description; the candidate then asks two clear questions about the same topic, with the correct usted forms, and reacts naturally to the answer.
