1.1 About the DELE A1 Exam: Purpose, CEFR Level & Registration

The Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) are official certificates of Spanish proficiency. The DELE A1 (Diploma de español nivel A1) is the first level of the general DELE series, which is aimed at candidates from 16 years old. A separate DELE A1 para escolares certifies the same CEFR level with school-age contexts for learners aged 11 to 17. This guide covers the general DELE A1 in its 2020 version, the format used since the April 2020 sitting.

Whether you are an adult beginner who wants an official milestone, a student who needs a certificate for a school or exchange programme, or a professional documenting basic Spanish, start by understanding who awards the diploma, what level it certifies and how registration works.

Institutional Framework & Awarding Authority

  • Awarding body: The Instituto Cervantes awards DELE diplomas on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports (Ministerio de Educación, Formación Profesional y Deportes). The Instituto Cervantes holds the academic, administrative and economic management of the diplomas under Royal Decrees 1137/2002, 264/2008 and 1004/2015.
  • University of Salamanca: The official DELE A1 exam guide states that the Universidad de Salamanca collaborates with the Instituto Cervantes in preparing exam forms and in grading the tests.
  • Design standard: DELE exams follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (Marco común europeo de referencia, MCER) and the Council of Europe manual for relating exams to the CEFR. The language that can appear is listed in the Instituto Cervantes Plan curricular: Niveles de referencia para el español (NRE).
  • Network: The official FAQ describes more than a thousand exam centres worldwide. The written tests are taken on paper, in person, on fixed dates.
  • No prerequisites: You can register for any DELE level without a previous course, certificate or lower-level DELE. Since November 2015, nationals of Spanish-speaking countries may also register.

Indefinite Validity

DELE diplomas have indefinite validity (vigencia indefinida): once you pass the DELE A1, the diploma never expires and never needs renewal. The computer-based SIELE certificate, promoted by the Instituto Cervantes together with UNAM, the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires, works differently. The official DELE–SIELE comparison lists SIELE as valid for five years and reported on a points scale rather than as a pass/fail diploma.

CEFR Level: The A1 "Breakthrough" Standard

The DELE levels correspond to the six CEFR levels: Basic User (A1, A2), Independent User (B1, B2) and Proficient User (C1, C2). Level A1 is called Breakthrough in English and Acceso in the Spanish version of the CEFR.

CEFR Proficiency Hierarchy
  [C2] Mastery (Maestría)
[C1] Effective Operational Proficiency (Dominio operativo eficaz)
  [B2] Vantage (Avanzado)
  [B1] Threshold (Umbral)
  [A2] Waystage (Plataforma)
> [A1] Breakthrough (Acceso) <-- target level for DELE A1

What the Diploma Certifies

The official DELE A1 page states that the diploma certifies enough competence to:

  1. Meet immediate needs: understand and use very frequent everyday expressions anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world to satisfy immediate needs.
  2. Exchange personal information: ask for and give basic personal information about yourself and your daily life.
  3. Interact with support: interact in an elementary way with speakers, provided they speak slowly and clearly and are willing to cooperate.

In practice, an A1 user can also recognise familiar names, words and very simple sentences on notices, posters, catalogues and menus. At A1 you are not expected to argue abstract opinions, narrate the past in detail or follow fast native conversation. The focus is clear, basic exchange about yourself and your immediate world.

Who Takes DELE A1 (and What It Does Not Do)

  • Beginners seeking validation: independent learners and evening-class students who want an external, permanent record of their first stage of Spanish.
  • Students: learners who want a certificate for a school, exchange or study-abroad application that asks for basic Spanish.
  • Employees: hotel, hospitality and customer-service staff who want to document basic Spanish.
  • Spanish nationality (important limit): for nationality by residence, Spain's Ministry of Justice accepts the DELE A2 or higher together with the CCSE civics test. A DELE A1 does not meet that language requirement. If another institution asks for a Spanish certificate, check the level it requires directly with that institution.

Registration Procedures & Examination Calendar

The general DELE A1 is offered only in some of the yearly sittings. The official calendar lists these written-test dates and registration deadlines:

SittingWritten testsRegistration deadline

November 2026Saturday 14 November 202630 September 2026

November 2027Saturday 13 November 202729 September 2027

Registration for the 2027 sittings opens on 18 November 2026. Deadlines fall about six to seven weeks before the written tests, and a centre can run out of places earlier, so register in good time. The DELE A1 para escolares has its own Friday dates (for example, 22 May and 13 November 2026).

How to Register

  1. Candidates in Spain: register online through the Instituto Cervantes exam portal (the portal currently directs candidates to its online shop at tienda.cervantes.org). You give a personal email address, which is used for all communication about the exam, and the photo identity document you will show on exam day.
  2. Candidates outside Spain: register with the accredited exam centre where you will sit the exam. Centres include Instituto Cervantes branches, universities, language schools and other accredited institutions, and each publishes its own procedure and local price.

Important

As a general rule you can ask for a full refund within 14 natural days of registering. After that, not attending does not normally give a right to a refund or to use the fee for another sitting, except in especially serious, duly justified cases. You can change level or sitting only while both registration windows are open and places remain.

Test-Day Logistics & Requirements

Identification and Paperwork

Bring original documents:

  1. Photo identification: the original official photo identity document you used to register, or your passport. Citizens of the European Union may also use their national identity card. Before the test, staff check your documents and take your photograph.
  2. Registration receipt and convocation: the receipt (resguardo de inscripción) and the official convocation (convocatoria) from your centre, which gives the place, day and time of the written tests and of the oral test.

The three written tests (reading, listening and writing) start from 9:00 local time in every centre. The oral test may be on the same day or on days before or after, as your centre decides. If you have not received the convocation ten days before the written tests, contact your centre yourself.

Materials and Rules in the Room

Centre candidate guides, for example the one published by the Instituto Cervantes in Athens, tell candidates to mark the reading and listening answer sheets with a No. 2 pencil, using an eraser to change an answer (no crossings-out or correction fluid), and to write the writing test in blue or black pen inside the boxes provided. Follow your own centre's convocation, which may list slightly different materials.

Phones, smartwatches and other electronic devices must be switched off and left where the centre tells you. Notes, dictionaries and talking to other candidates are not allowed. Be punctual: late arrival for the written tests is accepted only in special circumstances, and a candidate who does not attend is recorded as No presentado.
